POSITION SUMMARY:

This position oversees the daily work of the Biology Section members in the Fort Myers Regional Crime Laboratory. The role supports a positive forensic culture by promoting teamwork, collaboration, and ongoing teambuilding. Responsibilities also include ensuring compliance with the laboratory’s quality assurance program. Strong communication and leadership skills are essential, along with the ability to build and maintain effective working relationships with team members and criminal justice partners.

 

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Specific duties include:

  • Directing the work of section members to ensure high‑quality and efficient casework; 
  • Supervising staff in areas such as case assignment, file review, performance evaluations, attendance and leave, training, and resolving technical or administrative issues;
  • Monitoring compliance with the Forensic Science Quality Manual (FSQM), Laboratory Administrative Procedures Manual (LAPM), discipline‑specific SOPs, and accreditation requirements;
  • Coordinating daily section operations, setting priorities, and ensuring workload is distributed fairly;
  • Fostering a collaborative work environment through open, effective communication and teamwork;
  • Establishing clear performance expectations and completing performance appraisals;
  • Providing the Chief of Forensic Services with technical and administrative input; and
  • Applying the Evidence Submission Policy consistently and granting exceptions when appropriate.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a major in forensic science, criminalistics or in a physical or natural science; completion of a Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) Crime Laboratory Analyst training program and three years of professional experience in a crime laboratory analyst class (or equivalent class).

Note: Professional experience in the discipline for which the position will supervise can substitute on a year-for-year basis for the required college education. Preference will be given to applicants with 3 years of Biology crime laboratory experience.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of FDLE’s Policies and Procedures, laboratory policies and accreditation requirements;
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of quality assurance and quality control;
  • Knowledge of FDLE’s selection criteria;
  • Knowledge of purchasing procedures. Ability to coordinate repairs, preventative maintenance, and calibration of equipment;
  • Skill in communicating with the Chief of Forensic Services on laboratory and personnel matters;
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining cordial working relationships with contributors;
  • Ability to monitor the quality of work product; and 
  • Ability to establish and maintain attendance and leave.

BASE SALARY:

  •  $78,795.08

NOTES:

Starting salary will be at the minimum of the class pay range, unless otherwise dictated by FDLE's pay policy. The elements of this selection process may include a work sample and/or interview. Future vacancies may be filled from this position advertisement.
