Position Overview and Responsibilities:
This posting is for a Law Enforcement Investigator II within the Division of Law Enforcement’s Environmental Crimes Unit (ECU). The position conducts criminal, intelligence, and other types of investigations that threaten the environment or the public health and safety, in support of the Florida Department of Environmental Protection’s mission.
The duties of this position require a constituted state law enforcement officer certified by the Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission and empowered to enforce all laws of the state with full powers of arrest. This position requires independent judgment and the ability to apply technical law enforcement knowledge with limited supervision. Specific duties include:
- Investigate alleged violations of environmental laws, seize evidence, make arrests, and testify in court.
- Enforce federal, state, and local laws, rules, and regulations with an emphasis on environmental resource protection and environmental crimes investigations.
- Prepare and complete all forms and documents related to enforcement activities, such as offense reports, supplemental reports detailing investigative events and processes, affidavits, charging documents, search warrants, property receipts, and other paperwork that may be required by the division, state attorney's office, or U.S. attorney's office.
- This position has been identified as emergency mission essential personnel and may be required, on short notice, to perform duties and travel in support of emergency efforts.
- Subject to emergency calls on 24-hour basis/seven days a week for the protection of life or property.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
- Ability to deal with individuals and critical situations in an effective manner.
- Ability to take direction and work under minimal supervision.
- Ability to perform physical labor and withstand physical exertion.
- Ability to operate motorized equipment.
- Ability to read, understand, and implement complicated rules, regulations, and directives.
- Ability to work in different areas of the state on special details for extended periods of time.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Current law enforcement officer certification for the State of Florida, the federal government, or another state in the U.S.
- One year of sworn law enforcement experience
- This position requires a physical assessment test (PAT), oral board interview, a doctor's physical, a psychological evaluation, and a law enforcement background investigation.
- Valid driver license
- Travel
Position of Special Trust Requirement:
This position is designated as a Position of Special Trust in accordance with DEP Directive 422, Positions of Special Trust or Responsibility. Successful completion of background screening will be required for this position.
Applicable Job-Specific License or Certifications:
The duties of this position require a constituted state law enforcement officer (pursuant to s. 20.255 (10), F.S.) certified by the Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission, with full power to investigate and arrest for any violation of the laws of this state.
