The Work You Will Do:
INSPECTOR III /DISTRICT 4/DISTRICT MAINTENANCE/FORT PIERCE MAINTENANCE- ADMINISTRATION
This position will inspect state of Florida roadway for safety and roadway conditions in Martin, St. Lucie and Indian River County. This position will inspect contract work on state roadways. This position will perform data entry into the Maintenance Management System.

Your Specific Responsibilities:
Analyze complex plans and perform independent complex technical assignments to accomplish inspection and monitoring of work activities performed within the state Right of Way. Verify that work is performed according to all State and Federal specifications, plans, permits, policies, procedures, statutes, rules. Performs approved testing techniques through the use of hand tools, gauges and/or instruments to ensure materials used conform to Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) requirements. Use various engineering tools, equipment, Instruments and computers for performing technical engineering tasks, problem solving and record keeping. Provide information to consulting engineers, developers, architects and permit applicants as needed. Prepares all documentation in order to validate payments to roadway contractors.
Conducts surveys of signs, guardrail, and attenuators as required by procedures. Provides survey of roadway items to be inventoried for Roadway Characteristics Inventory (RCI). Fills out data coding sheet and enters roadway data into computer data base as needed. Gathers data and performs preliminary reviews for maintenance contract needs. Assists in the preparation of maintenance contracts. Prepares specifications as needed for use in maintenance contracts.
Inputs MMS data into the computer, in preparing MMS reports to be used for advising management for each Maintenance Cost Center, with technical studies and with the preparation and scheduling of the MMS evaluations. Assist supervisors with Districtwide quality reviews of the MMS. Reviews studies with supervisors to verify accuracy of all information.
Reports routine maintenance conditions as they exist in the field. Attend annual training to learn the most recent methods of evaluating the Yard's production in the MMS. Keep current in the procedures and other documents necessary to perform MMS evaluations.
Perform interpretation of documents related to authorized Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic) device usage, installation/placement and materials to ensure safe work zones. Reviews work site activities for conformity to safety regulations and takes corrective measures when deficiencies are noted.
Conducts/attends pre-work conferences on maintenance contracts and attends/conducts meetings with contractors/utility owners/permitees throughout life of projects as assigned. Acts as a representative of the Department on all issues related to contracts and permits. Issues work documents on contracts as directed. Prepares and issues work documents on contracts as needed.
The Successful Candidate will have the following required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of:
- engineering tools to perform field inspections of worksites for compliance to Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) roadway standards

Other Job-Related Requirements:
- This position requires the incumbent to complete the following self-study courses within 11 months of appointment: Construction Math and Plans Reading. Must also obtain the Advanced Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic) certification and the Qualified Stormwater Management Inspector certification (Florida Department of Environmental Protection through the Stormwater, Erosion and Sediment Control Inspector Training Program) within one year and maintain it. While on-duty status, may be required to drive a state owned or leased vehicle to perform the duties of this position. Valid Class E Driver’s License is required. May be required to work with or around hazardous materials; work nights and weekends and be available for emergency response work as necessary.
Minimum Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or Certificate of High School Equivalency
- Class E Driver’s License, and
- 12 months of infrastructure design, construction, or maintenance experience.
This position requires a valid Class (E) driver license with an acceptable driving record in accordance with the Department's Driver’s Record Requirements Policy. An unacceptable driving record is defined as any of the following:
- three (3) or more moving violations in the past three (3) years that accumulate three (3) or more points per violation;
- any two (2) convictions of reckless driving in the past three (3) years;
- a suspension or revocation of the driver license for moving violations in the past three (3) years; and
- a suspension or revocation for refusal to take a sobriety test, or any suspension or revocation for a DUI conviction, in the past four (4) years
