Your Specific Responsibilities:
This is a twelve-month senior community health nursing position functioning in the specialized area of school health program. This position may also work in the clinic doing immunizations, assisting the clinic staff with family planning and STDs, summer school in the public schools, summer programs throughout St. Lucie County, STD testing and treating in the community and clinics, Epidemiology, laboratory, or TB. The position involves work in areas geographically removed from direct supervision. The position also functions as a team leader for unlicensed school health aides in the public school system. Work is performed under the supervision of a community health nursing supervisor. Senior community health nurses may work in schools, the community and in any of the FDOH St. Lucie locations.
Perform vision, hearing, scoliosis and growth and development screenings that are statutorily mandated throughout St. Lucie County. Refer all students with abnormal screening results. Document all results and outcomes of screenings and referrals in Skyward and HMS. Delegate to UAP’s during the school year and summer school by assessing the necessity for and developing Nursing Care Plans and Emergency Action Plans for students with chronic health conditions. Reviewing individual Emergency Action Plans with teachers. Providing training which includes child specific training to Unlicensed Assistive Personnel (UAPs) in the performance of school health room duties, medications, and emergency actions plans. Document UAP competency through skills verification, testing and continued monitoring. Delegate nursing activities to competent UAPs.
During the school year and summer school, assess the need for, plan, develop, and implement health education classes for students, teachers, community, and parents to include 5-2-1-0, sun safety, water safety and hand washing. Attend 504 and IEP meetings, collaborate with parent/guardian, student, school staff, and health care provider.
Monitor school immunizations during the school year and summer months by running monthly reports and collaborating with the school district. Administer school immunizations in the health clinic, schools, or during outreaches in St. Lucie County as per the Vaccines for Children program and the Department’s policy. Complete the annual You Call the Shots training every year prior to the due date in January. Complete the series of You Call the Shots and attend a training for administering childhood vaccines. Provide the following services for Immunizations: vaccinate children and adults in the health clinic and community, update records in Florida Shots, Process 680 requests, Complete College Vaccine Forms, travel vaccines, PPD Testing, HMS visit/Screening for TB Gold Lab Tests, Employee Vaccinations, Religious Exemption Vaccine Education, and issuance of Religious Exemption Forms. Schedule Return Vaccination appointments. provide Back up for EPI Nurse, provide vaccines as needed, and assist with outbreak response.
Assist with laboratory duties of collecting specimens, entering orders and services into HMS. Documenting received test results into HMS and stocking supplies as needed. Assist TB department in entering orders and services into HMS, adding medications and reported medications to client’s medication plan in HMS, home visits to observing patients taking medication or by utilizing the Video Directly Observed Therapy process (VDOT) as needed. Assist in the health clinic, assist provides, and work in family planning, STD testing and treating, RN protocol, or as needed.
Preceptor for Nursing students. Participates on community and agency committees as assigned. Participates in school health training programs/meetings and Department of Health required meetings. Active Membership in the School Health Advisory Council. Participates in at least one Saturday back-to school event. Performs other nursing duties as assigned in other programs.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Must be able to ambulate more than 100 feet, lift more than 20 pounds, bend, and stand for more than 20 minutes. Must have a current Florida Driver’s license. Must be adept at public speaking.

- Licensed Florida Registered Nurse or a multistate registered nurse license from another compact state
- A valid Driver's license, if out of state a valid Florida Driver's license is required within 30 days of hire
- One year of nursing experience
