A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a major course of study in one of the biological sciences and three (3) years of professional biological experience in a field or laboratory program; or

A master's degree from an accredited college or university with a major course of study in one of the biological sciences and two years of professional experience as described above; or

A doctorate from an accredited college or university with a major course of study in one of the biological sciences.

GENERAL STATEMENT: This is a professional scientific position responsible for identification and confirmation of plant pathogens and pests using molecular techniques.

Performs Deoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA) and Ribonucleic Acid (RNA) extraction from mainly plant pathogens including fungi, bacteria, viruses and viroids. Designs primers to amplify specific markers from the mitochondrial and nuclear DNA. Performs polymerase chain reaction (PCR), optimizes PCR assays and purifies PCR products.

Operates and maintains Ion Torrent Personal Genome Machine and Sanger Sequencer. Generates DNA libraries for Next Generation Sequencing using E-Gel System.

Performs standalone Basic Local Alignment Search Tool (BLAST) searches by downloading the National Center for Biotechnology Information GenBank database into the local Division of Plant Industry computer and using command line codes. Performs bioinformatic analyses using Galaxy and other open-source software to characterize multiple markers or whole genome sequences from plant pathogens including fungi, bacteria, viruses and viroids.

Serves as a member of the multidisciplinary molecular team that includes several scientists specializing in the identification of plant pests using molecular techniques. This team supports the Botany, Entomology, Nematology and Plant Pathology sections, and other bureaus in the department and division in classical taxonomy and regulatory decision making.

Collaborates with other plant pathologists, scientists and stakeholders to describe and catalog known and previously unidentified pathogens. Publishes results on findings in peer-reviewed publications.

Communicates with scientists within and outside of Florida concerning molecular diagnostic techniques for plant diseases that threaten Florida agriculture.

Performs other duties as Bureau Chief, Assistant Bureau Chief, Assistant Director and Director may require, including special reports, special assignments and travel, committee appointments and task force appointments.


  • Skilled in molecular diagnostic techniques including PCR, Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA), Ribosomal Ribonucleic Acid (rRNA).
  • Skilled in Good Laboratory Practice (GLP).
  • Ability to compose written reports for publication in peer-reviewed journals using accepted format and proper scientific terminology.
