Minimum Requirements:           

  • Must have a valid Driver License Some travel required to execute job responsibilities. 
  • Must have at least 2 years experience investigating CPA complaints or performing financial audits.
  • Previous experience with collecting or analyzing evidence.
  • Investigative experience which may involve complex violations of Federal or State Statutes.

Duties and Responsibilities

Within Florida’s Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR), the division is responsible for the regulation of certified public accountants (CPAs) and accounting firms.  

  • Analyzes and process CPA complaints to determine appropriate disposition, including coding complaints for statistical tracking purposes.  This includes identifying possible violations of the Professional Practice Act, obtaining documentation, verifying licensure and research of prior client history.  Maintains complaint files and compiles statistics relating to complaints received and their disposition.
  • Conducts investigations of licensed and unlicensed activities, responds to complainant, notifies the subject of the substance of the complaint and requests response to allegations, contacts witnesses and other interested parties and requests information regarding knowledge of alleged violation, obtains and reviews court records to extract pertinent data and evidence, gathers case related documents, writes investigative reports and prepares files for review by administrator and legal office. Refers non-jurisdictional cases to the agency of appropriate jurisdiction and notifies complainant of same. Prepares and sends unlicensed activity complaints to State Attorneys' Offices. Evaluates and interprets laws, rules and regulations as they apply to the Accountancy Professional Practice Act and related statutes and recommends changes as necessary, composes reports, letters, memoranda, proposals, legislative recommendations and other official documents that relate to the complaints, complaint analysis and processing procedure and other issues relevant to the Accountancy Professional Practice Act. Review Clerk of Court records for pending legal actions.  Contacts attorneys for pending legal actions. Consults with, assists and acts as liaison between and among complainants, licensees, consultants and other governmental agencies and the various sections of the Department as it relates to enforcement process.
  • Assist supervisor with special projects relating to enforcement activities, including providing statistical data.  Also responsible for reviewing enforcement FAQs and webpage content for accuracy and current data, including making recommendations for content.
  • Ability to understand and apply applicable statutes, rules and policies relating to the practice of public accounting.
  • Ability to plan, organize and prioritize work assignments. 
  • Knowledge of Word and Excel software packages. 
  • Ability to communicate effectively in written and oral formats.
  • This position is required to have regulatory responsibilities and is subject to the provision of Chapter 60K-15 Florida Administrative Code
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
