SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

This position performs technical health support duties in the collection and processing of blood specimens, nasal swabs, and urine and fecal specimens.  These include but are not limited to the following: drawing blood from persons served for Laboratory testing; using proper techniques, proper tubes and assures proper post-phlebotomy care.  The OPS Lab Technician is required to work with minimal supervision and follows Laboratory Department and APD policies and procedures at all times.  In addition, assists in clerical duties in the Laboratory.

Order reference tests via paper or electronic system as required by reference laboratory.  Process and package specimens for deliver to reference laboratories to ensure optimal specimen integrity is maintained.  Retrieve results from reference laboratories by computer, phone, fax or mail.  Sort, file and deliver laboratory reports.  Screen reference laboratory results for critical values and notifies technologist when critical values are received.  Track inventory of laboratory supplies.  Order supplies from reference laboratories and vendors as needed.  Track pending reference tests to ensure completion.  Notify supervisor of any problems with reference laboratories.  Aid Licensed Independent Practitioners (LIP) in ordering the proper reference laboratory tests in the computer system.

Perform phlebotomy procedures by verifying the individual’s identification, use proper personal protective equipment, prepare venipuncture site, selecting appropriate tubes for the tests ordered, consulting reference manual when necessary.  Perform post-phlebotomy care and obtain help from other staff members when needed.

Order test in Laboratory Information System.  Maintain logs and other documents as required by supervisor.  Clean and disinfect laboratory counters and other surfaces daily and as required.  Track pending laboratory orders and notifying proper parties as required.  Assist LIP in ordering of lab tests and retrieving of lab results.  Answer phone

Performs other related duties as required.

 

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be willing to perform essential services before, during, and after an emergency.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Must maintain certification in Prevention and Safety Strategies (PASS)
  • Must maintain current Phlebotomy Certification.
  • Must maintain CPR Healthcare Certification, First Aide, and Infection Control.
  • Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds.
  • Must be able to do repetitive movements with arms, hands, neck and head.
  • Must have normal vision and hearing, including use of corrective devices.
  • Must be able to ambulate up and down a stairwell
  • Must be able to bend, twist, turn, kneel, stoop, squat, push, pull, lift and walk extended distances.
  • Must be able to physically operate all equipment necessary to do job tasks.
  • Must be able to sit and/or stand for one hour without a break
  • Must be able to remain alert while on duty

As a condition of employment, a person appointed to a position in the State Personnel System is required to participate in the Direct Deposit Program.  Rather than receiving a paper paycheck, your funds will be deposited directly into your account at your financial institution. This will be accomplished by Electronic Funds Transfer. Banks, savings and loan associations, and credit unions are eligible to accept such deposits. Retirement funds are also required to be in the Direct Deposit Program.

 

BACKGROUND SCREENING REQUIREMENT

It is the policy of the Florida Agency for Persons with Disabilities that applicants for employment undergo Level 2 employment screening in accordance with the requirements of Chapter 435, Florida Statutes, as a condition of employment or being permitted to serve as a volunteer.
