MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
 

A high school diploma or its equivalent and four (4) years of experience in laboratory work.
 

College or vocational/technical training can substitute at the rate of 30 semester, 45 quarter or 720 classroom hours for the required experience provided such education includes three courses in the physical and/or natural sciences.

Possession of a valid Driver License.

JOB DUTIES:
 

General Statement: This position assists in laboratory, greenhouse, and field work associated with research dedicated to managing the black bean bug (BBB), Brachyplatys subaeneus. This position will help meet the objectives of the project: 1) maintain a colony of BBB, 2) assess its effect on legume bean production, 3) evaluate biological control agents, and 4) evaluate potential pesticides.
 

Laboratory Work: Perform daily maintenance of BBB and parasitoid colonies using established rearing protocols. These duties include, but are not limited to, feeding insects, egg/parasitoid collection, and cage cleaning. Assist supervisor in conducting research. These duties include literature review and performing laboratory experiments testing bean yield, biological control agents, and pesticides. Maintain clean and sanitized laboratories, insect rearing areas, and various equipment. Follow procedures required while working in a state containment facility.
 

Greenhouse Work: Perform routine maintenance of BBB host plants including watering, pest control, plant propagation, and other assigned duties.
 

Field Work: Participate in a 5-day field research trip to Miami-Dade and Broward Counties. Assist with BBB egg and natural enemy collection and field evaluation of chemical controls and bean yield.
 

Prepare and maintain accurate written records of activities; enter collected data and other information into the appropriate location; prepare reports summarizing activities.
 

Performs other tasks as assigned by management.
 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
 

  • Knowledge of basic laboratory safety procedures.
  • Knowledge of basic principles in biology, entomology, horticulture.
  • Skill in Microsoft Excel and Word.
  • Ability to follow specific instructions and strict protocols, compile written reports.
  • Ability to work outdoors in hot, cold, and humid environments.
  • Ability to walk on uneven ground and in inclement weather.
  • Ability to lift and transport 45 lbs.
