APD provides critical services and support for customers with developmental disabilities to reach their full potential. SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The incumbent is responsible for providing practical nursing services to developmentally disabled individuals at Tacachale.

Nursing Responsibilities:

  1. Prepares, administers, and documents medications and treatments as per nursing policy and procedure.
  2. Maintains documentation in accordance with established policies and procedures.  Observes, records and reports physical and behavioral response to medication and treatment.
  3. Uses nursing process for ongoing care of individuals as need is identified.  Intervention would include, but not be limited to observation, referral to the registered nurse (RN), and/or the Licensed Independent Practitioner (LIP), medication and treatment as prescribed and/or crisis intervention.
  4. Maintains work area, medical supplies, and equipment, and adheres to infection control policies.
  5. Accompanies individuals to clinic and off-center appointments as assigned.
  6. Provides emergency nursing service within the scope of nursing practice.
  7. Provides nursing care and administers treatment as directed by a registered nurse to subacute, chronic, and convalescent residents.
  8. Assists a RN and/or a LIP in clinics, diagnostic tests and physical examinations by preparing clinic room for use, collecting routine specimens, taking and recording temperature, pulse, respiration, oxygen saturation, and blood pressure.
  9. Prepares and administers hypodermic injections as ordered by the attending LIP.
  10. Performs simple rehabilitative nursing procedures for selected chronically ill and aged residents.
  11. Assists a RN with screening procedures.
  12. Assists LIP with physical examinations.
  13. Assists RN in completing and maintaining medical records and residents’ progress.

 

Incident Management Responsibilities:

  1. Conduct an initial assessment and provide appropriate treatment as soon as possible after being notified or becoming aware of an injury or possible injury.
  2. Complete Section II of the DDC Incident Report Form by providing a detailed description of the injury (size, shape, color, location on the body). 
  3. Indicate the treatment given and the plan of care. 
  4. Establish the Type of Incident and Level of Injury. 
  5. Take two (2) sets of photos and complete the Photographic Wound Documentation form. 
  6. Ensure the Florida Abuse Hotline is contacted if abuse, neglect, exploitation, mishandling, mistreatment or sexual abuse/activity is witnessed, known or suspected. 
  7. Forward the Incident Report Form to the supervisor/in-charge staff for further action.
  8. As warranted, comply and assist authorized investigators from APD and other agencies, such as law enforcement, DCF Adult Protective Services, Medicaid Fraud Unit, and the Agency for Healthcare Administration.

 

Administrative:

  1. Assists in the development and monitoring of nursing service objectives.
  2. Participates as appropriate in all objectives developed for the individuals assigned.
  3. Works in conjunction with the registered nurse to assure continuity of care and adherence to ICF/DD standards.
  4. Attends interdisciplinary team meetings and special clinics as assigned.
  5. Participates in and reinforces health care teaching to assure adherence to current principles of care as ordered.
  6. Attends in-service training and participates in continuing education programs for the developmentally disabled person.
  7. Monitors and role models infection control programs during daily activities.
  8. Adheres to ethical practice standards.
  9. Participates in nursing committees as assigned.
  10. Performs other related duties.

 

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

  • A valid Florida Driver’s License.
    • If hired with an out-of-state license a valid Florida State driver’s license must be obtained within 30 days.
    • Corrective Lenses Restricted license are acceptable provided the driver wears the corrective lenses while operating a state vehicle.
  • Must be willing to perform essential services before, during, and after an emergency.
  • Must be willing to work beyond the normal work schedule to maintain minimum coverage levels and meet the needs of the Agency.
  • Must maintain active practical nurse license that allows practical nursing services in the State of Florida.
  • Must maintain certification in Prevention and Safety Strategies, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR). 
  • Must complete annual health screening. 
  • Must be willing and able to provide “hands-on” assistance to residents with activities of daily living to include: personal hygiene and grooming, such as bathing, toileting, and dressing.
  • Must be able to lift up to 40lbs with or without accommodations. 

This position may be required to perform essential services before, during, and after an emergency per APD OP 2-0035.

 

This position is critical to the safety and supervision of residents and may require the incumbent to work beyond their normal work schedule to maintain minimum coverage levels in the facility.

BACKGROUND SCREENING REQUIREMENT

It is the policy of the Florida Agency for Persons with Disabilities that applicants for employment undergo Level 2 employment screening in accordance with the requirements of Chapter 435, Florida Statutes, as a condition of employment or being permitted to serve as a volunteer.
