This is work providing practical nursing services to developmentally disabled individuals at Tacachale.  Work is performed under the direction and general supervision of a registered nurse, and is reviewed for compliance, standards and procedures.



a.  Prepares, administers and documents medications and treatments as per nursing policy and procedure.


b.  Maintains documentation in accordance with established policies and procedures.  Observes, records and reports physical and behavioral response to medication and treatment.


c.  Uses nursing process for ongoing care of individuals as need is identified.  Intervention would include, but not be limited to:  observation, referral to the registered nurse, medication and treatment as prescribed and/or crisis intervention.


d.  Maintains work area, medical supplies and equipment, and adheres to infection control policies.


e.  Accompanies individuals to clinic and off-center appointments as assigned.


f.  Provides emergency nursing service within the scope of nursing practice.


g.  Provides nursing care and administers treatment as directed by a professional nurse to subacute, chronic, and convalescent residents.


h.  Assists a professional nurse and/or physician in clinics, diagnostic tests and physical examinations by preparing clinic room for use, collecting routine specimens, taking and recording temperature, pulse, respiration and blood pressure.


i.  Prepares and administers hypodermic injections as ordered by the attending physician.


j.  Performs simple rehabilitative nursing procedures for selected chronically ill and aged residents.


k.  Assists a professional nurse with screening procedures.


l.  Assists physicians with physical examinations.


m.  Assists professional nurses in completing and maintaining medical records and residents’ progress.



a.  Assists in the development and monitoring of nursing service objectives.


b.  Participates as appropriate in all objectives developed for the individuals assigned.


c.  Works in conjunction with the registered nurse to assure continuity of care and adherence to ICF/DD standards.


d.  Attends interdisciplinary team meetings and special clinics as assigned.


e.  Participates in and reinforces health care teaching to assure adherence to current principles of care as ordered.


f.  Attends inservice training and participates in continuing education programs for the developmentally disabled person.


g.  Monitors and role models infection control programs during daily activities.

h.  Adheres to ethical practice standards.


i.  Participates in nursing committees as assigned.


j.  Performs other related duties.

Knowledge, skills and abilities, including utilization of equipment, required for the position:      

Knowledge of nursing principles, practices and techniques. 

Knowledge of human anatomy and physiology.

Skilled in the use of emergency equipment within scope of training.

Ability to interact, assess and respond to individuals who are developmentally disabled.

Ability to provide emergency nursing care to include but not limited to basic life support, emergency care for choking (abdominal thrust), rescue breathing and use emergency equipment.

Ability to stand, walk, sit and bend for periods in excess of three hours.

Ability to assist in lifting and transferring residents weighing more than 100 pounds, as needed.

Ability to successfully complete Prevention and Safety Strategies Training.


Licensure/registration/certification requirements (If applicable, list the appropriate Florida Statute or federal regulation cite):      

Possession of valid Florida Drivers' License and acceptable driving record in accordance with Tacachale policy.
