This is a highly skilled professional position which requires an expert understanding of the Federal WIC & Nutrition Program and the use of the WIC FL-WiSE data system with minimal supervision. Maintains current knowledge of the Federal WIC program regulations and state policies including WIC memos, FL-WiSE clinic manuals, WiSE notes and WIC procedure manual DHM 150-24. Having successfully completed the Nutrition Education Series of the Florid Nutrition Training Guide Modules and all required Competent Professional Authority (CPA) trainings, will provide quality nutrition care to WIC participants in compliance with the Federal Regulations. The incumbent is expected to promote cooperation, courtesy, and teamwork, in a diverse environment and as an employee of the Department of Health in Alachua County, represents the agency and its mission and values. Maintains courteous and cooperative relationship with staff and the public. Adheres to all departmental policy/procedure, state, and federal laws governing information, security and privacy. The staff must maintain a driver’s license and a car in good working order with adequate insurance. Staff must also immediately report any citations for moving violations as well as suspension of driver’s license.


Provides client-centered counseling using Value Enhanced Nutrition Assessment (VENA) skills for the WIC program clients, conducts record reviews, documents in FL-WiSE using appropriate format, and composes Nutrition Care Plans for high and medically high-risk clients using established protocols. Provides appropriate health care and other referrals as part of WIC and nutrition service delivery. Assists with the training of new staff in the certification and counseling processes. Responsible for self-assessments and staff assessments related to established quality assurance procedures and VENA self-assessment procedures.


Assists the Senior Public Health Nutritionist Supervisor with daily clinic activities, quality assurance reviews, monitoring and maintaining clinic production and implementing and participating in events to increase participation. Collects and evaluates data to complete reports and inventories and submits to supervisor in a timely manner. Responsible for the security and privacy of client information. Assists in developing procedures for the evaluation of the Alachua County WIC program and for the impact of the WIC program on the nutritional status of its clients. Plans, conducts, and evaluates training programs for staff. Develops and maintains cooperative relationships with other Department of Health divisions, clinics, and collaborative partnerships in order to develop and maintain cooperative programs and provide integrated services.


Functions as a Competent Professional Authority (CPA) in conducting nutrition assessments and accurately completing FL-WiSE screens, identifying nutrition risks and assigning appropriate food packages for clients.

Performs hematological and anthropometric testing. Responsible for biochemical procedures located in the WIC Procedure Manual DHM 150-24 regarding equipment, requirements, periodicity schedule and exceptions. Collects hematological and anthropometric measurement data as needed. Maintains universal precautions. Follows established guidelines and standards for safety in handling equipment, blood samples, and waste products. Assists clerical staff, as needed, to issue benefits.


Provides breastfeeding education and support WIC clients. Makes appropriate referrals to the Breastfeeding Coordinator. Attends and participates in agency-wide initiatives and efforts to improve the breastfeeding initiative and duration rates.


Attends and participates in staff meetings, in-service training and other professional and staff development activities.


Performs other related duties and responsibilities as assigned.


This position requires that the candidate be a licensed dietitian or nutritionist with the State of Florida or eligible for licensure as a dietitian or nutritionist with the State of Florida (Registered Dietitians with the Commission of Dietetic Registration for the American Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics are eligible for State of Florida licensure).  Be willing to travel within 2 hours of Gainesville as a team in a state vehicle.  Have experience instructing clients in nutrition principles, dietary plans and food selection and preparation. 



Preference will be given to those candidates who have experience working in the WIC Program.  Have experience providing breastfeeding education and support to clients.  Have experience using the FL-WiSE.
