The Work You Will Do:
Structural Materials Specialist III / Engineering And Operations / Bureau Of Materials And Research / State Materials Office / Structural, Chemical & Corrosion.
This position will provide oversight and technical support for the statewide corrosion mitigation program for Florida’s infrastructure. As a technical expert in corrosion-inhibiting materials and cathodic protection systems, the position will guide stakeholders in submitting applications to the program and ensure quality control and quality assurance of corrosion mitigation plans. Responsibilities include material evaluation and the review of plans, data, specifications, and procedures to develop technical solutions and ensure compliance with Department policies.

Your Specific Responsibilities:
Reviews the design of cathodic protection systems and corrosion management plans. Provides oversight and technical support for corrosion projects, including all types of cathodic protection systems and corrosion-inhibiting materials. Evaluates the performance of the corrosion plan to ensure the system and materials remain active and effective. Prepares inspection reports to document findings from corrosion projects.
Evaluates corrosion-inhibiting materials, including reviewing submittals for the Approved Product List program, conducting testing, and monitoring the long-term performance of the materials. Communicates with manufacturers to ensure that products and materials meet Department requirements.
Generates and reviews drawings for cathodic protection systems, structural crack mapping, and other related components.
Develops, reviews, and maintains specifications, procedures, manuals, and other documents related to the corrosion management program. Provides technical support to customers, with a focus on delivering timely and effective assistance. Provides guidance and training to customers as required.
The Successful Candidate will have the following required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of:
- Concepts, terminology, principles, and analytical techniques related to corrosion-inhibiting materials used in highway construction.
- Specification and engineering drawings used in design, construction, production, and operations.
Skills in:
- The use of power tools and inspection equipment.
- Personal computers for word processing, spreadsheets, and database applications.
Ability to:
- Perform engineering inspections.
- Analyze and interpret engineering data.
- Communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
- Work effectively in a team environment.
- Move around construction sites and lift up to 50 pounds.
Other Job-Related Requirements:
- Valid Class “E” Driver License is required.
- This position will be required to respond before, during and following emergency situations.
Minimum Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Prior experience using engineering or manufacturing tools, equipment and/or instruments.
- Prior experience operating a personal computer for word processing, spreadsheet, and/or database applications.
- Prior experience with evaluating construction materials.
This position requires a valid Class E driver license with an acceptable driving record in accordance with the Department’s Driver’s Record Requirements Policy. An unacceptable driving record is defined as any of the following:
- three (3) or more moving violations in the past three (3) years that accumulate three (3) or more points per violation;
- any two (2) convictions of reckless driving in the past three (3) years;
- a suspension or revocation of the driver license for moving violations in the past three (3) years; and
- a suspension or revocation for refusal to take a sobriety test, or any suspension or revocation for a DUI conviction, in the past four (4) years.
