The Work You Will Do:

Structural Materials Specialist III / Engineering And Operations / Bureau Of Materials And Research / State Materials Office / Structural, Chemical & Corrosion

 

This position will lead the Corrosion Field Team, overseeing staff supervision, data analysis, technical report preparation, and data system management. It coordinates field operations, including inspections, non-destructive evaluations (NDE), and the installation and maintenance of corrosion protection systems. The role also involves reviewing plans, specifications, and procedures to provide technical solutions and ensure compliance with Department policies. Additionally, the position is responsible for developing and maintaining corrosion-related documentation and delivering timely technical support.

Your Specific Responsibilities:

Coordinates corrosion inspection team operations.  Pilots team members to and from field assignments safely.  Inspects bridges and structures and their corrosion protection system components. Conducts non-destructive evaluations (NDE) of bridges and structures.  Obtains samples and performs field testing of bridges and structures.  Installs and maintains corrosion protection system components on bridges and structures.

 

Supervises employee by communicating with, motivating, training, and evaluating employee, and planning and directing employee work.

 

Reviews inspection reports.  Analyzes NDE and test data.  Prepares technical reports documenting findings.  Maintains the corrosion prevention data management system ensuring data and inspection records are entered accurately and timely.

 

Reviews quality control plans, construction plans, specifications, procedures and other documents necessary to execute the Department’s mission. Provides clear and timely comments as requested. Provides technical solutions when project specific plans, specifications, procedures, processes, or other documents do not align with the Department’s policies and procedures.

 

Develops, reviews, and maintains specifications, procedures, manuals, and other documents related to corrosion preservation.  Provides technical support to customers as requested. Provides support in time to meet the customers’ needs. Provides guidance and training to customers.

 

 

The Successful Candidate will have the following required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

 

Knowledge of:

  • Concepts, terminology, principles, and analytical techniques of structural materials used in highway construction.
  • Engineering design, construction, production and/or operations.

Skills in:

  • Operating a personal computer for word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications.

Ability to:

  • Operate a motorized boat and trailer. 
  • Analyze and interpret engineering data.
  • Perform engineering inspections.
  • Plan, organize and coordinate work assignments.
  • Communicate engineering information effectively.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
  • Work and be effective in a team environment.
  • Move around construction sites and lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Use engineering tools, equipment and/or instruments.

Licensure/Registration/Certification Requirements:

  • Must have or obtain a boating safety education card within one year of employment.

 

Other Job-Related Requirements:

  • This position involves extensive statewide travel as required. 
  • The incumbent is required to operate a motor vehicle and a motorized boat in the performance of their duties.
  • This position will be required to respond before, during and following emergency situations.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Prior experience using engineering or manufacturing tools, equipment and/or instruments.
  • Prior experience operating a personal computer for word processing, spreadsheet, and/or database applications.
  • Prior experience with evaluating construction materials.
