Specific Responsibilities:

This is a Health Support Technician position working for a large caseload of the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children Program (WIC). This position requires independent judgment, initiative, applying general knowledge of business practices and skill in applying instructions to accomplish various job functions Work is performed under the supervision of the Public Health Nutritionist Supervisor. This position may be asked to work in other clinics or community locations as required.  Complies with the mandatory requirements in Section 215.422 F.S. and Chapter 3A-24 Florida Administrative Code regarding prompt payment process of special formula. 

 

This position is designated as a sensitive position and is required to maintain confidential information in accordance with Florida Department of Health (FDOH) Palm Beach County Health Department (CHD) Information Security Policy, Protocols and Procedures. Confidential information data sets:  Social Security; WIC, Clinical Information; and Administrative. This position may view, update or release confidential information. This position has access to WIC FL WiSE System, Health Management System (HMS) Utilizes HMS for entering the Employee Activity Report (EAR’s), lab, Q-FLOW, FLShots.

 

Performs anthropometric measurements according to FDOH-CHD policies, procedures and protocols and DHM 150-24, operates all anthropometric equipment essential to required duties. Calibrates, cleans and maintains scales and length and height boards. Maintains calibration logs. Screens medical records for current weight and height including but not limited to, weigh and measure clients, using age appropriate equipment and procedures based on standardized practice and Center for Disease Control guidelines. Inputs all required fields on the Lab/Anthro screen in the FL WiSE System. 

 

Performs hemoglobin/hematocrit tests according to FDOH-CHD Laboratory Procedure Manual and DHM 150-24.  Screens medical record and file current hemoglobin information. Obtain medical release from client and follow-up with the health care provider or the FDOH-CHD lab to obtain results of testing. Performs finger sticks to obtain blood sample using universal precautions Disposes of blood contaminated materials in compliance with OSHA regulations. Cleans and sanitizes blood collection area and equipment.  Works with the Health Center lab to obtain hemoglobin test results in a timely manner.  Attends lab trainings as required. Reviews results of hemoglobin test and refer clients with results outside normal range to the nutritionist for follow-up according to established procedures.  Inputs all required fields in the Lab/Anthro screen in the FL WiSE System according to established procedures and time frames.  Maintains supplies and equipment for use in obtaining blood samples.  Prepares supply requests for approval.

 

Performs clerical duties, such as telephoning, verification of Immunizations in FL Shots, making referrals for family planning, maternity care and follow-up activities. Responsible for intake required information for Income eligibility determination for WIC participants according to DMS150-24 (WIC Supplemental Procedures Manual). Interviews clients to obtain and verify demographic and income data. Initiates client router for each client.  Initiates the establishment of client record in the FL WiSE System. 

 

Promotes breastfeeding as the optimal method of infant feeding.  Displays and distributes information related to good health and nutrition practices as directed.  Provides services in other health centers, satellite sites or other community locations as needed.  Attends staff meetings, training and staff development activities as required.  Keeps current on pertinent rules, regulations and procedures.  

 

 Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Ability to take accurate height and weight measurements and calibrate measuring devices
  • Ability to collect blood using universal precautions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisors and others.
  • Skill in the use of Microsoft Windows based computer software programs.
  • Ability to apply high-level customer service to internal and external customers.
  • Ability to communicate verbally and in writing in a comprehensible, focused and appropriate manner.
  • Ability to evaluate, analyze and organize information to develop an appropriate course of action.

  • Incumbent may be required to work during or beyond normal work hours or days in the event of an emergency.  Emergency duty required of the incumbent includes working in special needs shelters or to perform other emergency duties including, but not limited to responses to or threats involving any disaster or threat of disaster, man-made or natural.
  • Valid Driver’s License.
  • Travel throughout Palm Beach County is required.
  • Must be able to lift and carry items weighing up to 25 lbs.
