Duties and Responsibilities

This position performs a variety of armory duties in support of the Florida Highway Patrol. The Armorer is responsible for inspecting, maintaining, repairing, and servicing weapons for sworn staff. The Division Armorer is responsible for overseeing the daily activities of the Division Armory, security of the armory and weapons stored in the armory, administrative oversight of issuance and return of weapons, ordering ammunition and other munitions and support equipment. Establish and maintain a comprehensive database of weapons activities to include site inventories, annual inventories, weapons inspections as well any other necessary administrative activities including maintenance records of all weapons.  Assist with training members on the care, cleaning, and maintenance of weapons. 


The duties for this position will include:
•    Maintaining and operating a weapons testing and repair facility.
•    Performing evaluation testing of all defensive equipment/ammunition for agency usage.
•    Developing equipment specifications based on division needs for firearms, ammunition and holsters.
•    Maintaining agency firearms and ammunition inventory and records on issuance, testing, and repair.
•    Liaising with industry experts and vendors.
•    Preparing and/or delivering testimony regarding weapons used by the division.
•    Preparing special reports documenting equipment failures and making recommendations for management review.
•    Maintaining records of armorer certifications for all division weapons.

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of practices, methods, equipment, tools and materials used in inspecting, servicing and repairing firearms.
  • Ability to adhere to and enforce strict firearms safety protocols.
  • Ability to test firearms for safety and performance and objectively document findings.
  • Ability to follow department policies, procedures and regulations.
  • Ability to create and maintain accurate logs and records.
  • Ability to operate a variety of hand and power tools.
  • Skill in weapons testing and repairs to semi-automatic handguns, pump-action shotguns, bolt- action rifles and AR series rifles (preferably Glock and Remington).
  • Ability to effectively communicate with vendors, manufacturers, supervisors and members of other law enforcement agencies who perform similar armorer duties.  
  • Ability to use office software such as Microsoft programs, to include Microsoft Word for creating, formatting, and editing text documents; and Microsoft Excel for data entry, formulas, sorting, filtering, etc.
  • Ability to develop a weekly/monthly/annual management system for organizing, maintaining, inspecting, and overseeing all aspects of the Armory.
  • Ability to develop a plan for inspecting, cleaning, repairing, and rebuilding weapons on a weekly/monthly/annual basis.
  • Ability to train others in the safe care, maintenance and cleaning of Division weapons.
  • Ability to remain up to date on current and new weapons information, procedures, technology, etc. that could benefit the Division Armory.

 

Preferred Quailifications 

Preference will be given to candidates with the following:

  • Experience in professional weapon testing and repairing. 

 

Job related Requirements

  • High School Diploma.
  • Vaild Driver's License.
  • Must be able to lift to 50lbs.
  • Applicant must possess or have the ability to become a certifiend armorers by the listed below firearms manufacturers:
    • Glock Pistol

    •  Colt or AR-15/M16

    •  Sig Sauer Patrol Rifle

    •  Remington 870 shotgun

  • The position you are applying is subject to a Level 2 background check, along with Criminal Justice Information System (CJIS) clearance, to include a fingerprint-based check of the criminal records of the FBI, as a condition of employment pursuant to Chapter 110.1127, 435 and 943, Florida Statutes.  Please note that, since this position requires CJIS clearance, the Department will have access to all an applicant’s criminal and juvenile delinquency records, even those that have been sealed or expunged. 

 

General Information 

  • The elements of the selection process may include a skill assessment and/or oral interview.
  • Applicants being considered for employment will be required to submit to a fingerprint-based background investigation, which will include a check of the criminal history records of the FBI.  Fingerprints and associated information/biometrics will be retained in the FBI’s Next Generation Identification (NGI) system and fingerprints may continue to be compared against fingerprints submitted to or retained by NGI.
  • FLHSMV employees are paid once a month on the last workday of each month.  All state employees are required to participate in the direct deposit program pursuant to s. 110.113 Florida Statutes.
