This Biological Scientist II position serves a Surveillance coordinator for Sexually Transmitted Diseases Program in Duval County. This position is responsible for ensuring timely disease reporting and monitoring, as well as tracking, analyzing, assigning to the field, and closing cases of Sexually Transmitted Diseases, including Human Immunodeficiency Virus/Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (HIV/AIDS). The position reports to the STD Surveillance Supervisor and works in conjunction with other members of the local Disease Control team to ensure the health and safety of the community.
- Ensure that notifiable STDs including HIV/AIDS are reported by healthcare providers and laboratories in accordance with Florida Statutes.
- Complete timely and accurate entry of positive lab results for reportable STDs into the Surveillance Tools and Reporting System (STARS).
- Complete reports, analyze data, and perform case management activities as directed in the process of identifying individuals infected with a STD, HIV/AIDS, or other bacterial, biological and/or viral agents. These activities will include but not be limited to case discussions, work prioritization, records documentation, case management, interviewing, visual case analysis and documentation of activities in the STARS database.
- Conduct detailed record searches using various databases to verify and investigate demographic and medical information.
- Communicate with providers, hospitals, laboratories, and healthcare facilities to collect demographic, laboratory, clinical, and treatment information related to case reports.
- Ensure prompt attention to the STD emails and faxes.
- Assign and track cases promptly for field investigations.
- Work with hospitals, CBOs and Field Investigations Team to ensure follow-up on cases requiring prophylaxis and consultation on disease interventions.
- Educate clinicians and healthcare facilities on reporting and treatment guidelines for communicable diseases through written communication, field visits, and presentations.
- Participate in community outreach testing events, community educational presentations, staff meetings, and training sessions.
- Assist in special epidemiological investigations and/or studies requested by the Department of Health (DOH) and/or the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
- Communicates in writing, in person, and through electronic means concisely and positively. Takes initiative to multi-task with accuracy. Communicates and solves problems appropriately. Exhibits and maintains a positive attitude while working independently and in a team setting.
- Performs general core performance standards. Travel, special assignments and other duties and responsibilities, including those duties assigned during drills and actual emergencies/disasters. Attends related training and meetings as needed.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of Epidemiology and its application to public health.
- Knowledge of surveillance systems, research methodology and data analysis.
- Knowledge of information and techniques needed to diagnose and treat injuries and disease.
- Ability to communicate clearly.
- Ability to solve problems.

- Ability to gather information for decision-making.
Qualifications:
Minimum:
- Associates or higher in health science or related fields
- Experience working in healthcare or communicable disease programs
- Experience working with electronic health records, surveillance systems, and Microsoft
- Valid driver's license
Preferred:
- Bachelor of Science in Public Health or Health Sciences with 2 or more years of experiences working in a clinical setting or communicable disease programs.
