Your Specific Responsibilities:

This is a professional laboratory position responsible for testing and monitoring for Amino Acidemias, Fatty Oxidation Disorders, Organic Acidemias, Hemoglobinopathies and other Endocrine, Genetic and Metabolic Disorders. 

 

Prepare tests on all newborn screening filter paper blood specimens to detect infants at risk for Amino Acidemias, Fatty Oxidation Disorders, Organic Acidemias, Sickle Cell, Congenital Hypothyroidism, Galactosemia, Biotinidase Deficiency, Cystic Fibrosis, CAH and other Endocrine, Genetic and Metabolic Disorders, Initially check and approve test results electronically transmitted to mainframe computer database.  Assure that all positives and borderline results have correct data concerning date of collection, birth weight, type of feeding and transfusion. Perform follow-up testing to confirm results on those infants at risk for the Disorders tested in the Newborn Screening Laboratory. 

Saturday work and emergency work as required.

 

Maintain quality control data, participate successfully in proficiency testing and take corrective actions as needed.

 

Perform daily maintenance of instruments and troubleshooting if needed.

 

Delineate blood spots for hand punch, machine punch and those that are unsatisfactory on a rotating basis.

 

Perform other related duties as required.

 

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of the basic concepts and principles of the sciences. 

Knowledge of the procedures, equipment and materials used in laboratory testing and analysis. 

Knowledge of basic math. 

Skill in the use of laboratory equipment and materials. 

Ability to understand and follow technical instructions.  

Ability to work independently. 

Ability to communicate effectively.

 

Qualifications:

Minimum: Be eligible for a Clinical Laboratory Technician License or higher, or, Public Health Technician License or higher.

Preferred: BS in hard Science. Hold a Clinical Laboratory Technician License or higher, or Public Health Technician License or higher.
