Position Overview
The Multi‑Engine Aircraft Pilot is responsible for conducting and completing aviation missions in support of the Florida Highway Patrol. This is a non‑sworn position that performs specialized aircraft operations supporting public safety missions. When not engaged in aviation missions, the incumbent will support the Aviation Unit. Additional duties may include participating in training, assisting with flight operations procedures, supporting maintenance activities, and contributing to Aviation Unit safety initiatives.
Aviation Operations & Mission Support:
- Maintain pilot proficiency and knowledge of law enforcement aircraft standards.
- Conduct full preflight inspections including fuel sampling and system checks.
- Participate in aviation training, simulations, and law enforcement seminars.
- Conduct air surveillance missions supporting ground units.
- Modify flight schedules for weather and operational demands.
- Document discrepancies and coordinate repairs; notify the Chief Pilot.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Knowledge of Federal Aviation Administration Regulations.
- Knowledge of grammar, punctuation, and spelling.
- Skill in operating navigational aids.
- Skill in flying under instrument conditions.
- Ability to perform preventive maintenance on aircraft.
- Ability to describe facts and events accurately.
- Ability to analyze and interpret data.
- Ability to prepare and maintain accurate logs, records and reports.
- Ability to plan, organize and coordinate work assignments.
- Ability to communicate effectively.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
- Perform surveillance flights and emergency search missions.
- Maintain communication with officers via police radio.
- Preference may be given to applicants—regardless of total flight hours—who hold any of the following qualifications, as well as those with experience as a Certified Flight Instructor (CFI) or as an Airframe and/or Powerplant Mechanic (A&P):
• Rotorcraft–Helicopter rating
• Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) certificate
• Flight instructor certification
• Certified A&P Mechanic, with or without Inspection Authorization (IA)
• Aviation program management experience
• Sworn Law Enforcement experience
• Florida Law Enforcement Certification
• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university
Preference will also be given to applicants who have obtained an Associate’s degree or higher from an accredited college/university.
Licensure / Certification Requirements
Commercial Multi-Engine rating required AND Instrument rating required.
Job Related Requirements
- The position you are applying is subject to a Level 2 background check, along with Criminal Justice Information System (CJIS) clearance, to include a fingerprint-based check of the criminal records of the FBI, as a condition of employment pursuant to Chapter 110.1127, 435 and 943, Florida Statutes. Please note that, since this position requires CJIS clearance, the Department will have access to all an applicant’s criminal and juvenile delinquency records, even those that have been sealed or expunged.
- This position requires the incumbent to have and maintain a valid driver’s license in good standing. This means there can be no cancellations, suspensions, or revocations for a minimum of three years prior to employment and for the duration of employment. There can be no more than three chargeable crashes or any violation of Chapter 316, Florida Statutes, during any consecutive three-year period prior to and throughout employment.
- Candidates must possess, or be able to obtain, a valid FAA Class II medical certificate prior to appointment. Applicants who are not currently rated for an FLHSMV aircraft will be required to complete agency‑approved training.
- At least 50 hours of night flight time, 50 hours of instrument flight time, 500 hours multi-engine Pilot in Command and a minimum of 1500 hours total flight time.

General Information
- To be considered for this position, applicant responses to qualifying questions must be clearly reflected within the employment history. Software systems, actual work experience, and years of employment history must be clearly defined, or the application may not be considered.

- FLHSMV employees are paid once a month on the last workday of each month. All state employees are required to participate in the direct deposit program pursuant to s. 110.113 Florida Statutes.
