Your Specific Responsibilities:

This is a professional medical laboratory scientist position responsible for developing and enhancing the Medical Marijuana laboratory section of the Bureau of Public Health Laboratories. This scientist position will provide assistance in the development, adaptation validation, and implementation of new analytical methods for specimen microbial contamination as required by Florida Statutes, perform analyses independently and process specimens according to guidelines as recommended by ISO17025:2017.

The incumbent assists in the development, adaptation, validation, and implementation of new analytical techniques used to analyze organisms of Public Health concern

The incumbent performs sample preparation and complex microbiological procedures for diagnostic testing on various types of marijuana products submitted for laboratory analysis at the Jacksonville laboratory by the Office of Medical Marijuana.  Culture and molecular procedures will identify Shiga toxin, E. coli, Salmonella, Aspergillus niger, Aspergillus funigatus, Aspergillus flavus and Aspergillus terreus.   

Assumes responsibility for instrumentation assigned, documents daily maintenance, calibration, preventive maintenance, troubling and assures quality assurance objectives are maintained for all analytical methods performed

The incumbent ensures the accurate reporting and recording of laboratory results in the electronic Laboratory Information Management System and oversees the log in and chain of custody of specimens. The incumbent is also familiar with any other software that may be needed for operation and testing within the units.

Performs other tasks or projects assigned by supervisor.

Knowledge of terminology, principles and techniques used in analysis and testing. 

Knowledge of procedures, techniques & equipment used in lab testing and analysis. 

Skill in the use of lab equipment. 

Ability to communicate effectively.

Ability to write technical documents.

Ability to work independently. 

Ability to plan, organize and coordinate work assignments.

Qualifications:

Preferred: Bachelor Degree, three to 10 years of experience.
