Your Specific Responsibilities:
This is an independent, professional, Medical Laboratory Scientist position in the specialty of Serology/Immunology at the Bureau of Public Health Laboratories in Jacksonville. The incumbent in this position is a senior technical scientist, exercises independent judgment, and must have the ability to solve problems as well as make decisions regarding daily laboratory operations, including scheduling and staffing needs. This person will supervise Medical Laboratory Scientist II and I (MLS II/I) personnel and may assess need/workload and make appropriate distribution and assignments. This position spends the majority of the time engaged in supervisory responsibilities. This includes communicating with, motivating, training, and evaluating employees in addition to planning and directing employees' work. The incumbent has the authority to hire, transfer, suspend, lay off, recall, promote, discharge, assign, reward, or discipline subordinate employees or effectively recommend such action. The incumbent will also be required to develop performance expectations, meet with staff regularly to discuss performance, complete performance reviews, maintain vacation and work schedules, ensuring proper coverage, and complete timesheets.
The incumbent is a lead technologist performing complex serologic/immunologic procedures such as: Non-treponemal flocculation test, CMIA, TPPA, IGRA, etc. for Syphilis, Hepatitis, Tuberculosis, and performs amplified molecular procedures for the detection of Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, Mycoplasma genitalium, Trichomonas vaginalis and Hepatitis C. Incumbent performs accessioning, screening, or diagnostic testing of clinical specimens daily, and reports results utilizing the Laboratory Information System (LIMS). Incumbent reviews and approves test results on LIMS and ensures the confidentiality of laboratory records and reports.
Incumbent is designated as general supervisor (GS) responsible for the proper performance of all laboratory procedures and reporting of test results; may complete annual employee competency assessments for established employees and work directly with section supervisor in preparation for CLIA audits.
The incumbent must motivate employees to improve and maintain high quality and quantity of work performed to confirm with all current protocols, rules, and regulations regarding laboratory safety, as well as abiding by all state and federal laws that pertain to the employees, including quality control, quality assurance and competency assessments as per laboratory QA policy. Also, in the absence of the administrator, the incumbent may perform duties for the operation of the serology/immunology program and may approve leave requests.
The incumbent serves as consultant in serology/immunology to the Bureau of Laboratories three branch laboratories, as well as to county health departments, STD clinics, and private physicians.

Qualifications:
Minimum - Have an existing Florida Clinical Laboratory license or qualify for, are willing to apply for, and maintain a Florida Clinical Laboratory license.
Preferred – Bachelor’s degree. 3 years of experience.
