DESCRIPTION

This is an independent, professional, microbiology position in the field of Mycobacteriology and is the senior technical scientist for the section. The incumbent in this position exercises independent judgement and must have the ability to solve technical problems related to testing methods and test performance. The person will have the authority to review and approve test results, and to generate patient specimen reports. The incumbent must have the knowledge and skills to communicate well with the Tuberculosis (TB) Control Program, physicians and other health professionals. The incumbent will oversee any research studies undertaken by the Mycobacteriology Laboratory and will be responsible for development and implementation of new methods.

 

Provide technical oversight of all testing in the Mycobacteriology Laboratory including methods used and test algorithm. In addition to providing technical oversight, incumbent will perform testing, as needed, particularly for the molecular methods for identification of Mycobacterium tuberculosis and drug susceptibility testing.

 

The incumbent will provide expert consultation and be available to discuss any technical questions related to laboratory results with health care providers and the TB Control Program. Support to all areas of the laboratory will be provided to ensure test performance and result reporting is of the highest quality and is within the required turnaround times.

 

Applied research and analysis of new products for the identification and drug susceptibilities of mycobacteria will be reviewed, developed and implemented as appropriate.  The incumbent will investigate and initiate the evaluation of new laboratory techniques developed in the mycobacteriology field that may be useful in the public health laboratory setting. Data regarding new methodology or best practices for the Mycobacteriology Laboratory will be presented at national meetings and/or published as appropriate.

 

Consult with and provide guidance and training to other mycobacteriology laboratories, hospitals, private laboratories, physicians, county health departments, and others within the state. Provide communications regarding test menu, test interpretations, and service information for the Mycobacteriology Laboratory.

 

Assist with quality assurance and safety programs in the Mycobacteriology Laboratory.  Provide a review

of quality assurance and biosafety procedures and policies and provide input for any necessary revision of

such procedures on at least an annual basis.

 

Serve as the technical lead for any special studies, working with vendors for the development and/or validation and implementation of new or improved testing techniques.

 

Perform other related as required.

Knowledge of terminology, principles and techniques used in analysis and testing. 

Knowledge of procedures, techniques & equipment used in lab testing and analysis.

PREFERRED EDUCATION

PhD in a Biological or Chemical Science

 

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE

Five years Clinical Microbiology experience in a CLIA-certified laboratory

 

LICENSURE, CERTIFICATIONS, REGISTRATION REQUIREMENTS

Florida Clinical Laboratory Supervisor license in the specialty of Microbiology
