Job Description

A staff attorney will assist trial court judges in the Fourth Judicial Circuit with legal issues that require research and analysis, attending court proceedings, advising judges, and drafting memoranda and court orders. Staff attorneys primarily work on felony cases, including capital and non-capital criminal matters with a focus on postconviction motions. Staff attorneys will also work on civil, family, and probate matters.

 

Education and Training Guidelines

Graduation from an ABA-accredited law school.

 

Member in good standing of The Florida Bar within one (1) year of hiring.

 

To qualify for a Senior Trial Court Staff Attorney, one also must have five (5) years of work experience in the practice of law or as a law clerk in an appellate or trial court.

 

*Position classification and beginning salary will be based on experience.

 

Trial Court Staff Attorney: $61,868.92 (10% less if not a member of The Florida Bar)

 

Senior Trial Court Staff Attorney: $72,377.88

Research legal issues by effectively reading, analyzing, and interpreting statutes, rules, and case law.

Draft memoranda and orders that are well-written and founded on reliable authority.

Proofread all work and pay attention to details.

Communicate effectively orally and in writing.

Work independently on projects using time management skills to prioritize pending assignments.

Work collegially with other staff attorneys to comprehend legal and procedural issues and assist in making recommendations for court policy.

Exercise discretion, confidentiality, and honesty with court matters while maintaining high ethical and professional standards.
