Description of duties: The FWC’s NE Region is seeking a motivated candidate to fill the position of RCW Biologist on three Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs) in Osceola County, FL. This is a full time, OPS, year-round position working on red-cockaded woodpecker population monitoring on the Three Lakes, Herky Huffman/Bull Creek and Triple N Ranch WMAs located in central Florida. This position is responsible for all RCW monitoring activities on three WMAs including but not limited to monitoring of activity and recording activity status of cavities, maintaining natural and artificial cavities, identifying nest trees, nest monitoring, climbing trees using Swedish sectional ladders, capturing and banding adults and nestlings, conducting fledge checks, and identifying birds by reading color bands. This position will also complete data entry, collection of GPS data, create various maps to aid in management planning of the WMAs and assist with locating cavity trees during prescribed burns and other management activities. The position will also assist area biologists with prescribed burn operations as needed with a team of biologists burning over 25,000 acres. Position will also assist with annual reports and other monitoring projects on the WMAs as necessary, including northern bobwhite. 

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Familiarity with and interest in avian ecology and protected species management.  Experience with GPS equipment, ArcGIS and spreadsheets.  Keen interest in working outside, often alone and sometimes in harsh conditions, as well as inside with GIS software and databases. Ability to climb ladders up to 50’ and use ATVs, chainsaws, tractors and hand tools.  Must be able to work within an interagency team as well as interpret instructions and complete assignments independently.  Ability to manage a large-scale monitoring project across multiple areas. Good organizational skills are a must. Applicants must possess a valid driver’s license.

 

Preference will be given to candidates with prior RCW experience such as installing artificial cavity inserts, banding birds, reading color bands, experience navigating in the woods with ATV and 4x4 vehicles and using Microsoft Access and Excel.
