MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

 

A doctorate in Veterinary Medicine or Eligibility for licensure as a Veterinarian by the State of Florida in accordance with Florida Statute 474, and Board certified in Pathology. 

 

A doctorate in Veterinary Medicine or Eligibility for licensure as a Veterinarian by the State of Florida in accordance with Florida Statute 474. Residency training in anatomic pathology and two (2) years of professional experience in similar area may substitute for non-board pathologists.

 

American College of Veterinary Pathologists Diplomate designation is preferred.

 

Requires possession of a valid Class E driver license.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

Incumbent must pass a pulmonary function test with medical evaluation, must undergo and pass regular respirator fit-testing, and must wear a respirator when required.  Will be subject to the requirements of the proper use of appropriate respirator.

 

Occasional travel required.

 

JOB DUTIES:

 

Responsible and accountable for managing budget/dollars/resources (staff, vehicles, computers, cell phones, etc.) of any assigned programs in an efficient and accountable manner.

 

Responsible for ensuring that assigned program areas have operational procedures and processes which result in accountability and compliance with division and department policies and procedures.

 

Incumbent serves as Head of the Pathology Department and Section Heads of the Clinical Pathology/Parasitology Sections. Incumbent provides supervisory oversight of the Histopathology Section and Necropsy Section which are within the Pathology Department and each with a respective Section Head supervisor. Undertakes gross anatomical pathology and cytology duties on a rotational basis and participates in the case load of animal tissue slides submitted for microscopic examination. On a rotating basis with other pathologists, the incumbent is responsible for the postmortem examination of all animals received for this purpose and for coordinating the appropriate test results prepared by the various laboratory sections to assure a proper and complete report is rendered.  Responsible for overall resident training and ensures Pathology Department employees get appropriate training from other in-house or university pathologists and other subject matter experts.

 

Responsible for supervising and ensuring proper diagnostic procedures are performed on body fluids, tissues, excrements, or secretions to detect specific diseases or parasitic infestations.  Diagnostic procedures include the cytologic, microscopic, immunologic, culture or hematologic examination of tissues or fluids.  Responsible for the supervision of hematologic and clinical serum chemistry procedures and the reporting of raw data thereof. From specimens examined, incumbent will prepare concise, accurate reports of morphological diagnoses and conclusions.  As requested, incumbent will provide technical information to veterinarians and owners. The incumbent oversees, ensures other pathologists’ proficiency and participates in external proficiency testing panels. When appropriate trainings are recommended for other pathologists. Incumbent fosters scholarly activities and pathology case rounds involving residents and other subject matter experts.

 

In coordination with the Quality Assurance (QA) Coordinator and Bureau QA Manager, develops quality assurance procedures and ensures that appropriate quality control methods, and biosafety standards are enforced and maintained.  Monitors and resolves sample quality issues and performs testing troubleshooting and problem solving.  Composes Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), forms, uploads and update necropsy quality control records in Q-pulse.  The incumbent is required to participate in emergency planning and response exercises and/or preparedness for surge outbreaks of classic or foreign animal diseases.

 

Incumbent will maintain current on knowledge through review of appropriate scientific literature on an ongoing basis.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL, AND ABILITIES:

 

  • Veterinary Pathology residency.
  • ACVP Board certification preferred.
  • Thorough knowledge of veterinary pathology.
  • Thorough knowledge of animal diseases.
  • Knowledge of animal husbandry practices of different species.
  • Ability to identify gross and microscopic lesions in animal tissues and write reports and interpretive summary of such findings.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
