A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a major in one of the biological sciences and one (1) year of professional biological experience in a field or laboratory program; or

A master's degree from an accredited college or university in one of the biological sciences.

Possession of a valid Class E Driver License.

Occasional travel, including overnight and sometimes up to two (2) weeks at a time on an emergency program, required.

This position may be required occasionally to vary daily schedule or work on weekends.


GENERAL STATEMENT: This position coordinates, performs, and assists in laboratory and greenhouse procedures related to the detection and elimination of citrus graft transmissible pathogens.

Performs tissue culture and related duties including, but not limited to, making media, dropping seed, caring for tissue cultured plantlets and acclimating plantlets to greenhouse conditions.

Performs duties related to biological indexing, sample collection, increase propagations, parent tree propagation, and caring for shoot tip grafted trees.  Oversees pathogen collection and maintains healthy controls. Coordinates greenhouse staff to ensure planting and grafting schedules are on track to reflect program needs. 

Tracks program varieties; ensures paperwork and databases are up to date.  Schedules next action dates for program varieties.  Coordinates with program director for transfer of material to LaCrosse for testing and propagation purposes.  Ensures all procedures and documents are complete before recommending release. 

Performs general greenhouse duties as directed by supervisor, including but not limited to, planting seed, grafting, watering, weekend watering, de-suckering, thinning/transplanting. 

Schedules and performs necessary sample collection and conducts DNA extraction; coordinates with the LaCrosse lab for testing.

Holds a p-card and assists with PO requisitions for laboratory and greenhouse supplies as directed by supervisor. Coordinates certification and maintenance of equipment in laboratory and greenhouse; updates MSDS files; maintains inventory of laboratory and greenhouse supplies and notifies supervisor when additional supplies are needed. 

Performs other related duties as required by supervisor.


  • Knowledge of basic plant tissue culture.
  • Knowledge of citrus virus symptoms and plant reactions.
  • Knowledge of equipment and materials used in citrus virus/viroid indexing.
  • Skill in use of laboratory equipment and materials.
  • Skill in plant dissection.
  • Ability to use Access to modify and/or create queries, forms and reports.
  • Ability to understand and follow technical instructions relating to laboratory procedures.
  • Ability in use of sterile technique.
  • Ability to work for prolonged periods in hot, humid environments.
  • Ability to lift and move up to 35 lbs.
