This position requires a valid Class B Driver’s License with an acceptable driving record in accordance with the Department's Drivers Record Requirements Policy. An unacceptable driving record is defined as any of the following:

  1. three (3) or more moving violations in the past 3 years that accumulate 3 or more points per violation;
  2. any 2 convictions of reckless driving in the past 3 years;
  3. a suspension or revocation of the driver license for moving violations in the past 3 years; and
  4. a suspension or revocation for refusal to take a sobriety test, or any suspension or revocation for a DUI conviction in the past 4 years

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

Performs skilled work in the diagnosis, repair, overhaul and replacement of gasoline or diesel engines, transmissions, clutches, brakes, electrical systems, hydraulic systems and other parts and major components in automobiles, trucks, heavy equipment, and other related equipment. Field test vehicles and equipment to ensure the repairs have been satisfactorily completed. Repairs, changes, and balances tires on automotive and heavy equipment.

 

Performs preventative maintenance work to ensure that equipment is maintained and is in proper working order.  Performs periodic maintenance, repair, and preparation of seasonal equipment.

 

Submits requests for parts and supplies. Responsible for properly tracking and reporting time charged on various work activities and completing shop work orders. Purchases parts and shop supplies as P-card holder and is accountable for proper processing of invoices and completion of required paperwork and work orders. Operates personal computers and printers for processing warehouse commodity issue tickets and work orders.

 

Complies with all waste generation, storage, and disposal laws, rules, and policies. Assists in the maintenance of proper documentation of all waste generation and disposal activities. Elevates questions/items of concern to Shop Manager.

 

Responds to emergency road service calls and performs minor repairs to vehicles and equipment.  Cleans up after repairs and returns tools to their proper location.  Performs minor welding, paint and body repairs as needed.

 

Instructs other mechanics or helpers in the repair of automobiles, trucks, and other equipment.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of repair and maintenance of automobiles, trucks, small engines and heavy equipment.
  • Knowledge of diagnostic equipment.
  • Knowledge of the use of repair manuals.
  • Knowledge of purchasing rules and regulations.
  • Knowledge of all waste generation, storage, and disposal laws, rules, and policies.
  • Skilled in the use of hand tools and mechanical equipment.
  • Skilled in replacing, repairing, and installing various components and accessories such as radios, heaters, windshield wipers, etc.
  • Skilled in documenting work performed and materials used on work orders.
  • Skilled in performing preventive maintenance on vehicles and various equipment.
  • Skilled in customer service.
  • Ability to operate motor vehicles.
  • Ability to troubleshoot automotive and equipment problems.
  • Ability to perform a variety of gasoline or diesel repair and maintenance.
  • Ability to assist in body and fender repair work.
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds, climb, squat, stoop, push, pull, crawl and bend.
  • Ability to use appropriate safety equipment.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to perform minor welding.
  • Ability to operate and perform pre-trip/post-trip inspections required on commercial motor vehicle (CMV) with gross vehicle weight (GVW) of 26,000 lbs. or more.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with others.

 

OTHER JOB RELATED REQUIREMENTS:

Possess a valid Class “B” CDL (Commercial Driver’s License) with air brakes is required at time of hire.

 

While on duty status, the position’s incumbent must be readily available to operate a Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV), consistent with the type of Commercial Driver’s License (CDL-Class B with air brakes) the incumbent is required to possess, or on a routine basis performs other CMV safety-sensitive functions.

 

This position will be required to respond before, during, and following emergency situations. The incumbent of this position is required to work with or around Department of Corrections inmates.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Possess a High School Diploma or Certificate of High School Equivalency and two years of experience as a mechanic in passenger vehicle and heavy equipment repair and maintenance. An additional year of experience, for a total of three years’ experience, in passenger vehicle or heavy equipment repair and maintenance is a substitute for a High School Diploma or Certificate of High School Equivalency. Possess a valid Class "B" CDL (Commercial Driver’s License) with air brakes is required at time of hire.
