The Division of Habitat and Species Conservation is comprised of six sections and two offices.  This is an exciting opportunity to serve as the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s Cooperative Area Fisheries and Wildlife Biological Scientist III on the Osceola and Nutrien-White Springs Wildlife Management Areas (WMA) in cooperation with the lead managing agencies: United States Forest Service, Florida Forest Service, and Nutrien, Inc.

 

Description of Duties –

  • Provides recommendations to the lead managing agency’s area manager and assists where possible to implement effective and cost-efficient projects that maintain or enhance wildlife habitat, such as food plots, prescribed burning, exotic plant control, and mechanical treatments.
  • Implements public hunt programs, including facilitating public access, providing assistance to hunters and other public users, and coordinating with the lead managing agency regarding the administration of hunting opportunities and area-specific hunting regulations.
  • Supervises a part-time OPS Fish and Wildlife Technician who is responsible for maintaining seven hunt camps on Osceola WMA. Provides oversight and assistance as necessary to maintain camps in clean and orderly condition.
  • Develops and oversees bid specifications, contracts, and monitoring of vendor compliance.
  • Completes annual work plans, budget proposals, accomplishment reports, and other administrative tasks.
  • Conducts population surveys of selected species using scientifically accepted techniques, including data summary and reporting.
  • Surveys habitat types and monitors changes that take place in vegetative communities.
  • Responds to nuisance bear complaints, reports of road killed bears, and other wildlife issues within assigned area.
  • Assists with habitat management and wildlife monitoring on other WMAs as needed.

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:  Knowledge of wildlife biology, assessment and inventory methods for wildlife and habitat, collection and analysis of biological data, and fire ecology. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Skilled in the use of computers for word processing, information management, communications, and data management/analysis. Experience using ArcGIS. Ability to safely operate 4WD vehicles, ATVs, farm tractors, and trailers. Excellent organizational (time management, office organization, information management), customer service, communication, and problem-solving skills. Experience in project management. Ability to work well with minimal supervision, as well as participate actively in teams. Ability to independently manage an array of projects simultaneously. Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective internal and external working partnerships.

Level of Education – Preferred Bachelor of Science degree with a major in one of the life or physical sciences, or a Master of Science degree in one of the biological sciences. Four years of directly related professional experience can substitute for the Bachelor of Science degree.

Additional Requirements: Will be required to obtain and maintain a Florida Class A Driver License (CDL) and Florida Certified Prescribed Burn Manager Certification. This position requires random drug testing once a Florida Class A Driver License is obtained. Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a background check.
