MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: 

 

A bachelor’s and/or master’s degree in Forestry or a related field from a Society of American Foresters accredited college or university; or

 

Anticipated receipt of a bachelor’s and/or master’s degree in Forestry or a related field from a Society of American Foresters accredited college or university within six (6) months of the closing date of this advertisement.

A bachelor’s and/or master’s degrees in Forestry or a related field obtained outside the United States must either: 1) be obtained from a Society of American Foresters accredited college or university; or 2) curriculum must include at least two (2) of the following four (4) courses: Silviculture, Dendrology, Forest Mensuration or Forest Management. 

 

NOTE: Applicants will provide an academic equivalency evaluation obtained in the United States showing the required courses.

JOB DUTIES:

 

This is a highly technical position responsible for a variety of forestry related programs on the State Forest.  The incumbent must deal with forestry and environmental issues affecting both the public and state owned forest land.

 

Provides technical forestry assistance on State Forests in the management of timberlands for revenue generation and sustained yield as well as balancing environmental concerns; assists with timber marking, volume estimation and administration of timber and other forest product sales; provides technical assistance in planning for multiple use of the forest and ensures that ecosystem management is practiced; assists with various management activities; helps to prepare contracts for all silvicultural operations and oversees these operations while in progress to ensure contractor compliance. 

 

Responsible for developing and implementing the management plans on assigned state lands.  Activities include supervision of forest inventory (including rare, threatened and endangered plant and animal species), timber sales, and all season fire management program, road maintenance and repairs and establishment of recreational sites. 

 

Provides technical assistance in developing prescribed burning plans to ensure minimum impact of smoke and maximum use of assigned resources.  Ensures post burn evaluations are completed in a timely manner thus confirming that sound forest management objectives are being met.  Participates in and maintains all necessary training needed to conduct and participate in prescribed burning.

 

Provides wildfire and emergency response support as directed.  Assists in the development of smoke management, wildfire prevention, prescribed fire, pre-suppression burning plans and hazardous fuels mitigation.  Assists in the enforcement of Florida’s open burning laws and regulation.

 

Utilizes mass media systems such as newspaper, radio and television to keep public informed of developments on the state forest.  Provides local schools with information and conducts periodic field trips for environmental education.

 

Responsible for budgetary control of assigned state lands, which includes budget preparation and management, preparing contracts for service, handling timber sale receipts and general budgetary responsibilities. 

 

Performs related work as required, which may include the handling of revenue.
