DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES:

The State Attorney’s Office for the Third Judicial Circuit of Florida is responsible for the prosecution of all crimes in Columbia, Suwannee, Madison, Dixie, Taylor, Hamilton, and Lafayette counties.  We are looking for attorneys who have good judgment and share the office’s mission to keep people safe by prosecuting those who disrupt our community and to ensure the pursuit of justice is done in a transparent, fair, and thoughtful way that maintains the trust of those we serve.

 

Applicants must have a strong interest in courtroom litigation, with excellent communication and critical thinking skills. Attorney responsibilities include but are not limited to: prosecutorial criminal casework requiring preparation of legal documents, legal research, taking of depositions, and interviewing of witnesses, victims and other parties to ascertain the facts of cases for prosecution. Trial work includes case preparation for court presentation, examining and cross-examining witnesses/defendants/victims, and summarizing cases for presentation for jury and non-jury trials.  Duties of the position require professional interaction with the public, law enforcement, and office staff. Applicant must be able to work independently and as a team member.

 

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE: Applicants must be a member in good standing with the Florida Bar.  Certified legal interns with a course concentration in criminal law will be considered. 

 

COMPENSATION: Entry-level Assistant State Attorneys are compensated at an annual rate of $77,000 with more experienced candidates being compensated at a rate commensurate with their experience.  Certified Legal Interns are compensated at an annual rate of $65,000.  The full package of State benefits accompanies these positions including State of Florida retirement, insurance options, paid holidays and leave.
