An opportunity is anticipated for a self-motivated, hard-working individual, with strong resource management, administration, visitor services, protection, and maintenance experience to fill a Resident Assistant Manager position at Lake Kissimmee State Park, and Allen David Broussard Catfish Creek Preserve State Park located in Polk, Florida. Park resources include over 13,000 combined acres of land, lakes, trails for hikers and equestrians, full-facility campsites, as well as primitive camping facilities, and the youth camp area which can accommodate up to 50 people.  Florida's cowboy heritage comes alive at Lake Kissimmee with living history demonstrations of the early Florida "cow hunters" in an 1876-era cow camp.  The parks have numerous species of rare and endangered plants and animals.

Florida's heritage comes alive with living history demonstrations of the early Florida cow hunters in an 1876-era cow camp.

 

Visitors enjoy boating, canoeing and fishing in the picturesque lakes. Nature students can hike over 13 miles of trails to observe and study the abundant plant and animal life.

 

Six miles of trails are open to equestrians. A large, shaded picnic area with pavilions is available. The park has full-facility campsites as well as a primitive camping facility.

 

The youth camping area can accommodate up to 50 people. The dark skies make stargazing a popular nighttime activity for campers.

The park is located off State Road 60, 15 miles east of Lake Wales.

Pay:

Your Specific Responsibilities:

Supervises the park staff and participates in the management of the area’s resources, facilities, and public use under existing rules and operating policies to provide the proper levels of administration, resource management, visitor services, protection, and maintenance for Lake Kissimmee State Park.

 

ADMINISTRATION - Participates in all areas of employee training, supervision and discipline.  Supervises the staff in fiscal and purchasing procedures and policies. Ensure property procedures and policies are applied.  Participates in the administration of the collective bargaining agreement and maintains good employee relations.  Coordinates work schedules and assignments.  Checks reports, fee collection and miscellaneous records prepared by the staff.  Ensures accuracy and timely completion of various assigned administrative tasks required for park operations by park staff.  Informs and instructs staff on proper guidelines as laid out in the operations manual, and directives.

 

VISITOR SERVICES – Participates and supervises in all areas of visitor services.  Coordinates interpretive programs, activities, events and manages schedules for park unit.  Meets the public, interprets the resources, facilities and services, resolves problems and provides for good public relations.  Supervises the staff and provides guidance in all areas of visitor services and related activities.

 

RESOURCE MANAGEMENT – Participates and supervises in all areas of resource management activities as related to park unit including: prescribed and wildfire activities, horse and cattle herd management, natural habitat restoration, water way management, erosion control, trail instillation, mapping and marking; prescribed burns and wildfires; native species tracking and management; and exotic removal.

 

MAINTENANCE – Participates and supervises in all areas of park and equipment maintenance.  Identifies maintenance needs through daily inspections.  Maintains maintenance schedules and supervises the staff to assure maintenance on a daily, weekly and yearly basis is regularly performed.  Supervises and assists with the maintenance of buildings, roads, bridges, trails, water systems, wastewater systems, vehicles, equipment, etc.  Ensures that division policies are applied and followed by staff in all areas of maintenance and equipment operations.

 

PROTECTION - Ensures Park rules are enforced pertaining to all natural, historical and archaeological facilities and resources and use thereof, for the enjoyment of the visitor.  Ensures that all rules, regulations and policies are enforced as directed.  Ensure visitor, staff, facility, equipment and park grounds safety.

 

Performs related work as required.

 

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of advanced management principles, practices and techniques; Florida ecosystem functions and resource management techniques required to manage/restore natural communities; cultural resource preservation and restoration techniques; methods of compiling, organizing and analyzing data; building maintenance and construction; business principles. 

 

Ability to:  supervise people; prepare and maintain schedules; analyze programs and proposed projects; prepare reports and records; plan, organize and coordinate work assignments; plan and prepare educational, interpretive and promotional material and programs; understand and apply laws, rules, regulations, policies and procedures; establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; communicate effectively verbally and in writing; operate personal computers;.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Valid driver’s license
  • Successfully complete background/fingerprint check
  • Successfully complete required pack test
  • Reside on park property

 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Prior to being hired, applicant will be given a single opportunity to take and successfully complete a supervised moderate pack test at a date and location to be announced.  Pack test requires applicant to complete a two-mile walk while carrying 25 lbs in less than 30 minutes.
