Your Specific Responsibilities:
The incumbent is part of a global public health organization and is expected to support the Florida Department of Health in Polk County in its mission to protect, promote, and improve the health of all people in Florida through integrated state, county and community efforts and its vision to be the Healthiest State in the Nation. Furthermore, the incumbent is expected to incorporate the agency values of Innovation, Collaboration, Accountability, Responsiveness and Excellence in all aspects of their work.
The incumbent in this position is an Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner working within a County Health Department clinic performing certain medical acts within Protocols established mutually with the CHD Medical Director and in conformance with specialized certification. Work is performed under direct supervision of the Advanced Practice Nurse Specialist.
CLINICAL:
- Provides Nurse Practitioner services in clinics to support core services and adult health programs.
- Assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation are done utilizing established medical protocols.
- Assesses clients and family physical, emotional and social needs, provides counseling as needed.
- Performs physical exams, counseling, recommends medical treatments following established protocols and/or referring to other providers as appropriate.
- Obtains and interprets necessary lab procedures.
- Distinguishes between normal variations and abnormal deviations on assessment and refers client to appropriate sources.
- Recognizes and manages any abnormal findings.
- Maintains clinic records.
- Works in an expanded nursing practice role, which includes independent decision making.
CONSULTATION:
- Serves as a resource person to the nursing staff for any core service and adult health concerns.
- Evaluates program efficiency and effectiveness and recommends changes which would improve program operation.
MISCELLANEOUS:
- Attend clinic staff meetings offered by the Polk County Health Department and other agencies.
- Presents programs as requested by community groups to help promote understanding of Health Department programs.
- Maintains travel, time and attendance and leave records.
- Completes computer forms i.e. EAR’s and CSR’s etc.
- Participates in Patient Flow Analysis and other health department studies as requested.
- Processes phone calls from patients and other agencies.
- Performs any functions not previously mentioned but may be recommended at any future date by the county health director.
- Other support functions as necessary.
- Performs other duties as required, including performance of additional interpreter duties, consistent with skill level, and as needed.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of nursing principles, practices and techniques
- Knowledge of human anatomy and physiology
- Skill in performing uncomplicated surgical procedures
- Ability to administer prescribed medications
- Ability to perform complete physical appraisals of patients
- Ability to identify and evaluate illnesses
- Ability to initiate diagnostic laboratory tests and evaluate the results
- Ability to manage the care of patients
- Ability to work with patients having a variety of physical problems
- Ability to compile and evaluate medical histories and other clinical and laboratory data
- Ability to plan, organize and coordinate work assignments
- Ability to communicate effectively
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others
Qualifications:
- Current Florida Driver License
- Active licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse in accordance with Florida Statute 464 or eligible to practice nursing in accordance with Florida Administrative Code 210-8.27.

Emergency Duty: Incumbent may be required to work before, during and/or beyond normal work hours or days in the event of an emergency. Emergency duty required of the incumbent includes working in special needs or Red Cross shelters, or performing other emergency duties including, but not limited to, responses to or threats involving any disaster or threat of disaster, man-made or natural.
