Your Specific Responsibilities:
The incumbent is part of a global public health organization and is expected to support the Florida Department of Health - Polk County in its mission to protect, promote, and improve the health of all people in Florida through integrated state, county and community efforts and its vision to be the Healthiest State in the Nation. Incumbent functions as a Licensed Practical Nurse within the Polk County Health Department, under the direct supervision of the Senior Community Health Nursing Supervisor.
Clinical services include Adult Health, Family Planning, OB, STD, HIV and Immunizations. Incumbent’s duties include but are not limited to the following
- Follow all local, state, and federal rules and regulations. Comply and perform within the scope of practice as defined by the Florida Nurse Practice Act.
- Interview and complete medical history and assist providers with clients coming into the Health Department for specific medical problems or routine health care needs
- Assist Medical Provider with examinations and medical procedures for clients.
- Prepare culture slides, hand the provider instruments, and assist as needed.
- Perform routine tests, such as taking/recording temperature, pulse, respiration, and blood pressure and collecting specimens for laboratory analysis.
- Report any unusual symptoms/complaints of clients to clinic registered nurse or Provider as appropriate.
- Assist in clinic flow by interviewing/exiting clients and completing medical records timely.
- Provide appropriate educational information to clients.
- Enter accurate documentation/program requirements in client electronic medical records in accordance with Health Department standards.
- Administer medications and perform treatments as prescribed to assigned patients.
- Provides screening for the HIV antibody virus including pre- and post-test counseling according to department standards.
- Works as a functional team member with the MD/APRN/RN’s and clerical staff to ensure clients are seen in a timely manner.
Other Patient Care Duties include but are not limited to
- Assists in maintaining and receiving medications. Reports any discrepancies to supervisor.
- Links clients to care including completing referrals, patient assistance program for medication forms, and other follow up as needed under the direction of supervisor.
- Takes messages off the clinic program office phone. Answers and returns phone calls from clients.
- Clean work area according to clinic policy and biohazard waste policy.
- Conduct inventory of medical supplies and keep exam rooms stocked.
- This position may serve clients that speak only Spanish, Creole, or other languages. It may require performance of interpreter duties, if bilingual, or implementation of the Department’s Limited English Proficiency Plan.
Other duties include but not limited to
- Participate in orientation and staff development activities.
- Incumbent will travel to and cover other clinics within the county as staffing needs indicate and as directed.
- Performs other duties as required, including performance of additional interpreter duties, consistent with skill level, and as needed.
Immunizations Administration include but are not limited to
- Administer immunizations using proper technique including correct needle and anatomical site selection according to protocol/recommendations/provider order.
- Provide counseling and teaching information about administered vaccines to client.
- Maintain proper storage and handling of vaccines per Health Department policy and procedures.
- Accurately complete documentation required per Health Department policy and procedures for vaccines administered including entry of immunization history and immunizations administered into Florida SHOTS.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of nursing principles and techniques.
- Knowledge of human anatomy and physiology.
- Knowledge of pharmacy/medications and protocols.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office including MS Outlook and Teams.
- Skill in the use of medical equipment & instruments used in providing nursing care.
- Ability to demonstrate manual dexterity.
- Ability to administer medications.
- Ability to work with patients.
- Ability to interpret and follow medical instructions.
- Ability to observe patient's symptoms and reactions to treatment.
- Ability to communicate effectively.
- Ability to establish & maintain effective working relationships with others.
Qualifications:
- This position requires licensure requirements as a license practical nurse in accordance with Florida Statute 464 or eligible to practice nursing in accordance with Florida Administrative Code 210-8.27. Florida Driver’s License is a requirement of this position.

- Emergency Duty: Incumbent may be required to work before, during and/or beyond normal work hours or days in the event of an emergency. Emergency duty required of the incumbent includes working in special needs or Red Cross shelters, or performing other emergency duties including, but not limited to, responses to or threats involving any disaster or threat of disaster, man-made or natural.
