Your Specific Responsibilities:

This position is for a Licensed Practical Nurse who will be providing services to OB, Family Planning, STD, Adult Health and immunization clients under the direction of a Senior Community Health Nurse Supervisor, licensed Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner, and/or a licensed Physician in a clinic setting.  


  • Interview and assist providers with clients coming into the Health Department for specific medical problems or routine health care needs.              
  • Assist ARNP and physician with examinations and medical procedures for clients.
  • Perform routine diagnostic tests, medical treatment and procedures such as taking/recording temperature, pulse, respiration and blood pressure; preparing clients for medical procedures.
  • Applying external fetal monitor to clients and monitoring strip for client reactivity or problems.
  • Report any unusual symptoms of clients to clinic charge nurse, ARNP, and/or physician.
  • Assist in keeping the clinic flowing by interviewing clients and completing medical records timely.
  • Provide appropriate educational information to clients.
  • Provide documentation in client electronic medical records in accordance with Health Department standards.
  • Clean work area according to clinic policy and biohazard waste policy.
  • Provide medication to clients according to nursing protocols.
  • Make referrals on clients needing treatment and follow-up on those referrals.
  • This position may serve clients that speak only Spanish, Creole, or other languages.  It may require performance of interpreter duties, if bilingual, or implementation of the Department’s Limited English Proficiency Plan.
  • Provides screening for the HIV antibody virus, pre and post-test counsels, provides education, and                                                                                           

           refers for medical evaluation and other support services.

  • Maintains time/attendance/EARs records.
  • Provide administration of immunizations according to protocol.
  • Provide counseling and teaching information about administered vaccines to client and/or client’s parent/legal guardian.
  • Maintain proper storage and handling of vaccines per Health Department policy and procedures.
  • Accurately complete documentation required per Health Department policy and procedures for vaccines administered.
  • Entry of immunization history and immunizations given in computer Florida SHOTS.
  • Participate in orientation and staff development activities.
  • As a state employee of the FDOH Polk County – employee will participate in disaster preparedness and recovery activities.

  • Knowledge of human anatomy and physiology.
  • Skill in the use of medical equipment & instruments used in providing nursing care.
  • Ability to demonstrate manual dexterity.
  • Ability to administer medications.

  • Ability to interpret and follow medical instructions.
  • Ability to observe patient's symptoms and reactions to treatment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Ability to establish & maintain effective working relationships with others.


Licensure/Registration/certification Requirements:

  • This occupation requires licensure as a practical nurse in accordance with Chapter 464, Florida Statutes or eligible to practice nursing in accordance with Florida Administrative Code 210-8.22 or 8.27.
