Your Specific Responsibilities:

The incumbent is part of a global public health organization and is expected to support the Florida Department of Health in Polk County in its mission to protect, promote, and improve the health of all people in Florida through integrated state, county and community efforts and its vision to be the Healthiest State in the Nation. This position is for a Registered Nurse whose primary function will be (1) providing childhood, adult and international immunization in both the clinic setting as well as community outreach events, (2) serving as a backup for the Rabies program (3) serving as back up for Mobile Health Unit nurse coverage.

 

Clinical Duties:

  • Distributes educational and promotional materials that emphasize importance of vaccine preventable diseases and available vaccinations to staff and clients in the clinics; as well as during outreach events, and to health care providers, Health Management Organizations, senior centers, active coalitions, nursing homes, assisted care facilities, and the general public. 
  • Assess, educate and administer adult/childhood immunizations as well as travel vaccines, according to protocol for clients of all ages.
  • Assist and act as a backup in assessing, educating and administering Rabies Vaccine under the guidance of Health Service Manager for Immunization and Hepatitis Unit.
  • Provide counseling and teaching information about administered vaccines to client and/or client’s parent/legal guardian.
  • Assist with teaching of immunization procedures to new nurses in the clinic, including the computer Immunization Module and all appropriate documentation.
  • Enters immunization history and immunizations given in Florida Shots and all other documentation required per Health     Department policy and procedures for vaccine administration.
  • Participates in community educational outreach events and emergency response activities.  Alerts appropriate managers of vaccine related concerns.

 

 Inventory Storage and Reporting

 

  • Incumbent will be responsible for the Florida Department of Health in Polk County Vaccine for Children’s vaccine storage, handling, ordering, inventory and usage monitoring in accordance with Department of Health Policy 350-8-12.  Vaccine accountability reports will be generated quarterly. The cumulative amount of all “wasted/spoiled/expired” vaccines shall be limited to 3% and/or $5,000 each year.  The cumulative amount of all “unaccounted for” vaccine shall be limited to 1% each year.
  • Maintain proper storage and handling of vaccines per Health Department policy and procedures. 
  • Assists with monitoring temperature controls with notation on appropriate logs for refrigerator and freezer per protocol
  • Order vaccines as needed and monitor vaccine expiration dates per policy. 
  • Performs weekly and end of the month vaccine inventory.
  • Evaluates reports monthly from the Florida Department of Health Immunization Section field staff and reports quarterly, to improve the Health Department “IQIP” rates by monitoring 0-18 year olds immunization compliance.

 

 

Other Duties as Assigned

  • Data input of immunization records into Florida SHOTS and HMS computer systems.
  • Processing faxes, incoming and outgoing mail. 
  • Providing phone coverage as needed. 
  • Assisting with immunization clinical coverage at other clinic sites if needed. 
  • Assist in providing nurse coverage for Mobile Health Unit if needed.
  • Acts as back up for the Rabies Program as needed.
  • Completing individual travel expense reports, time sheets and Employee Activity Record (EARs).
  • Attends staff meetings, general staff training, and committee meetings in compliance with Health Department policies.

 

Performs any other related duties as determined by the supervisor to maintain the flow and efficiency of the clinic.

  • Skill in the use of medical equipment & instruments used in providing nursing care.
  • Ability to demonstrate manual dexterity.

  • Ability to observe patient's symptoms and reactions to treatment.

Qualifications:

  • This position requires licensure requirements as a registered nurse in accordance with Florida Statute 464 or eligible to practice nursing in accordance with Florida Administrative Code 210-8.27.
  • Valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain one within 30 days of employment.

  • Emergency Duty: Incumbent may be required to work before, during and/or beyond normal work hours or days in the event of an emergency.  Emergency duty required of the incumbent includes working in special needs or Red Cross shelters, or performing other emergency duties including, but not limited to, responses to or threats involving any disaster or threat of disaster, man-made or natural.
