ENVIRONMENTAL SPECIALIST II

Your Specific Responsibilities:

  • Schedule and perform routine compliance inspections at regulated facilities that have aboveground and/or underground petroleum storage tanks, ensuring the owners and operators follow Chapters 62-761 and 62-762, Florida Administrative Code
  • Checks all testing records and insurance documents of the regulated facilities to ensure they meet compliance with Chapters 62-761 and 62-762, Florida Administrative Code
  • Document inspection findings in the Florida Inspection Reporting Storage Tanks (FIRST) database
  • Participates in audits conducted by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection
  • Drafts professional letters to storage tank owners and operators, indicating in-compliance or out-of-compliance status
  • Also communicates regularly with owners and operators to schedule routine inspections
  • Routinely follows up with facility owners and operators on violations when necessary and composes return-to-compliance letters
  • Works closely with the storage tank community to answer questions regarding what documentation and testing records are required at the time of inspection
  • Attends and participates in meetings, workshops, teleconferences and conferences for training, information, and updates on the statewide Petroleum Storage Tank Compliance Program
  • Assists the supervisor and manager with other related duties as assigned
  • Optimizes the quality and efficiency of projects, organization-wide, through contribution of technical expertise, man-hours, consultative services, and consolidation of services
  • Maintains annual HAZWOPER Certification

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of  Florida Department of Environmental Protection regulations regarding compliance of storage tanks, practices and methods
  • General knowledge of pollutant storage tank components
  • Ability to read, understand, interpret rules, regulations and technical manuals; Ability to prepare thorough and detailed reports
  • Good verbal and written communications skills
  • Ability to set and meet deadlines, problem solve and manage multiple tasks
  • Ability to operate standard office equipment including personal computer using word, spreadsheet, database, and related software

Qualifications:

Minimum

  • Three (3) years experience of professional regulatory experience
  • Valid Florida driver’s license 

Preferred:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Environmental Engineering or a related field, or in one of the biological or physical sciences
