Your Specific Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will be a Medical Assistant who works in the Pinellas Park High School Clinic with the Health Department.  This role integrates clinical care, laboratory services, health education, and operational support to promote the physical and emotional well-being of students. The Medical Assistant ensures efficient clinic operations, delivers high-quality care, and supports public health initiatives in collaboration with school staff and Department of Health personnel.

 Medical Assistant 

  • Receive and conduct initial assessments of student patients.
  • Triage patients according to clinic protocols.
  • Provide first aid and emergency care as needed.
  • Assist with patient discharge instructions and follow-up care.
  • Supervise and support safe and accurate self-administration of medications, including insulin, per policy.
  • Perform venipunctures, urine collection, and finger sticks for students of all age groups.
  • Conduct vision and hearing screenings; measure height and weight.
  • Collect specimens and perform lab testing in accordance with Florida Department of Health guidelines.
  • Prepare specimens for transport to external laboratories.
  • Record lab results accurately and timely in the electronic health record.
  • Perform daily, weekly, and monthly equipment maintenance and quality control checks, document per Florida statutes.
  • Maintain a clean, disinfected, and safe lab environment.
  • Provide health education to students on topics such as tobacco use, vaping, nutrition, physical activity, substance use, and other healthy behaviors.
  • Support school-wide health promotion initiatives in collaboration with school staff and public health teams.
  • Maintain efficient clinic flow and coordinate with nursing supervisors and Center Managers.
  • Communicate effectively with students, families, school personnel, and the health care team.
  • Requisition and maintain adequate supplies to ensure uninterrupted clinic and lab operations.

Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Works with the clinical services team that includes physicians, nursing staff, and other paraprofessionals to collect and document health and/or immunization histories for clients in the electronic record as required. 
  • Consults with supervisors and examiners regarding client needs, concerns or problems
  • Conducts pre-clinical interviews, to include, but is not limited to: Adult and Adolescent Health, Family Planning, STD, Primary Care, Pediatrics, Specialty clinics and/or immunization histories.
  • Completes: Medical history intake and update to include allergies, current medications, domestic violence screening, and vital signs.
  • Administers injections as ordered under the direction/supervision of examiner.
  • Offers education and information regarding Family Planning methods available and pretest counseling for HIV testing
  • Completes:  E-lab requisitions as ordered
  • Enters HMS service codes on the date the service has been provided.
  • Provides and documents health education, referrals and follow up.
  • Documents all observations and actions accurately utilizing the electronic record, and the Florida Shots Registry
  • Prepares clinical area for services prior to session: maintains a clean work area before, during and after services;
  • Directs clients to laboratory, clinic and examiner; assists examiner and nursing staff.
  • Maintains the Biomedical Waste storage containers per DOH regulations and helps facilitate communication between staff and biomedical waste transporter.

Medical Assistant All

  • Assesses needs and provides medical support to other clinical areas as needed.
  • Works in other centers and programs based on agency need.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge and utilization of equipment
  • Knowledge of medical terminology;
  • Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing, utilizing approved DOH abbreviations when documenting in the electronic medical record.
  • Ability to maintain accurate and appropriate medical documentation in electronic medical record.
  • Ability to follow medical instructions.
  • Ability to work with persons of a different race, language, culture, or socioeconomic status. 
  • Ability to perform successful venipuncture in 2 attempts or less.
  • Ability to perform IM Injections

 

Qualifications:

Minimum

  • Graduation from Medical Assistant Program
  • At least 6 months expereince working as an medical assistant
  • Current avalid Florida Driver's License  or able to obtain one within 30 days of employment
  • Current CPR certification
  • Access to private transportation and willing to travel to other locations and provide coverage as needed.

Preferred

  • Experience doing EKG’s and/or spirometry
  • Experience working with adolescents in a clinical setting
  • Experience obtaining laboratory specimens and preparing them for testing
  • At least 1 year experience taking vital signs including blood pressure, pulse, respirations, height, and weight

     

    Additional Requirements:

    • Ability to start work between 6:30 and 7:00 a.m.
    This is a 10-month and 40-hour work week position that follows the school schedule. The clinic has limited hours during the summer. Typically all clinic staff return approximately 2.5 weeks prior to school starting in August.
