Senior Community Health Nursing Supervisor 

 

The Department of Health in Pinellas has a Registered Nurse Specialist position open in the Medical Services Program at the Department of Health Pinellas – Mid County. The successful incumbent will work in the Medical Services program within the scope of Agency protocols and State and Federal guidelines. The successful incumbent will be responsible for supervising clinics support staff, including, MA’s, LPN’s and Clerical Staff. 

Your Specific Responsibilities:

  • Coordinates multiple clinic activities across supervisory and divisional lines to ensure efficiency between admitting, laboratory, nursing, immunizations and nurse issuance. 
  • Responds to emergencies such and post exposure prophylaxis for needle stick injuries in and outside the building. 
  • Acts as the Center Manager in his/her absence. 
  • Evaluates staff performance through on-site observation, review of records and reports, team meetings and individual conferences. 
  • Attends Quality Assurance/Improvement meetings.  Provides feedback from QA/QI meetings, chart review, etc., through summary to supervisor with identified problems and proposed corrections.  Involves staff in chart review process and other QA activities as needed.  Meets with involved staff to discuss and implement corrective actions.  Documents and monitors results.  Follows and ensures that nursing staff adheres to Nursing Regulations and Technical Assistance Guidelines regarding professional practice and compliance with F.S.464, regarding licensure and safe practices.
  • Plans workload, workflow, deadlines, time utilization, and outcomes with employees and supervisory staff as appropriate.  Cooperates and coordinates with all staff to facilitate client intake, assure maximum productivity and smooth clinic-client flow.  This includes collaboration with admitting/medical records, physicians, practitioners, and laboratory as well as nursing and paraprofessional staff. 

 

This is a working supervisor position.  On many days, the successful incumbent will be responsible for the following:

  • Assess and evaluate clients in a variety of settings within the scope of Florida State and Federal guidelines, and Florida Department of Health in Pinellas County policies and the Nurse Practice Act.  Services will be performed and documented accurately utilizing designated electronic medical records and established policies and procedures.
  • Use the nursing process, utilize nursing skills of interview, observation and assessment to determine the medical, social and psychological needs of client/family/community and provide interventions as needed.
  • Provide direct services to clients including:  immunization, administration of ordered medications, pregnancy testing, tuberculosis testing and other testing or services which fall within the nursing practice.
  • Offer a broad range of effective family planning methods and services in the most efficient and effective manner.
  • Counsel clients/family/community in basic health promotion  and risk behaviors, including but not limited to:  communicable disease control, maternal and child health, family planning, nutrition, growth and development,  safety and anticipatory guidance.  Advises and counsels client on health promotion, STD & HIV risk reduction, and care and management of disease.
  • Assist examiners as needed. 
  • Assist in review of electronic laboratory results and provides follow-up and case management following Florida Department of Health in Pinellas County Local Policy.
  • Document all observations and actions accurately utilizing the electronic record, and the Florida Shots Registry.
  • Provide Nurse Issuance of Medications following DOH policy and guidelines, and Florida Department of Health Pinellas County policy.
  • Assists as needed in all Florida Department of Health in Pinellas County centers based on agency need.
  • Provides professional leadership and nursing care in SNU shelter.
  • Attends annual staff and nursing  inservices and  Nursing Action Team Meetings when scheduled by agency.
  • Obtain all Florida Department of Health and Florida Department of Health in Pinellas County required yearly training.

 

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to assess clients and make sound nursing judgments independently. 
  • Knowledge of nursing and public health principles, practices & techniques. 
  • Ability to plan, organize, and coordinate work assignments. 
  • Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing, utilizing approved DOH abbreviations when documenting in the electronic medical record. 
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others. 
  • Ability to operate a personal computer and accompanying software programs. 
  • Ability to safely administer medications and immunizations within scope of nursing licensure. 
  • Ability to work with persons of a different race, language, culture, or socioeconomic status. 
  • Ability to adapt to necessary changes in duties, duty station, or work hours for the benefit of the agency.
  • Ability to learn and maintain proficiency of computer skills & new programs required by Medical and Clinical Services divisions. 
  • Skilled in one-on-one interviewing; ability to maintain accurate and appropriate medical documentation in EMR system.

 

Qualifications:

Minimum:

  • Current active Florida nursing license or a multistate license from another compact state per The Florida Nurse Practice Act, as outlined in Chapter 464
  •  Experience using an electronic medical record 
  • At least 1 year supervisory/management experience in any type of setting
  • Valid Florida Driver’s License with access to private transportation or able to obtain within 30 days of hir

Preferred:

  • 1 year experience working as a Nursing Supervisor.
  • Experience working in a Public Health Setting
