Your Specific Responsibilities:
This position performs professional Public Health Nursing work in a specialized area requiring training beyond that required as a Registered Nurse. This is a twelve-month community health nursing position functioning in the specialized area of school health nursing in Citrus County schools and works independently. This position may also work in the FDOH Citrus clinic during school breaks. This position has the duties and responsibilities as a Liaison between the (FDOH) Florida Department of Health in Citrus County and the Citrus County School District. Statutory Authority: Section (s.) 381 Florida Statues and Rule 64F Florida Administrative Code. Has access to both DOH and school district electronic records systems. May provide direct and indirect nursing services in structured and unstructured environments at Health Department clinics and in the School Health program at assigned schools. May be assigned to any school within the Citrus County School District and may travel to all schools within the district.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Works with the School District to ensure that no student will be admitted or attend any public or non-public school without proper documentation; Performs record reviews to determine compliance with the following:
- Certification of Immunization or Certificate of Immunization Exemption.
- Health examination within the past twelve months for all students entering Florida schools for the first time.
Manages health care issues of students concerning actual or potential health problems which include but are not limited to:

- Nursing Assessments and triage including rapid assessment of acute physical problems when necessary.
- First aid and emergency treatment.
- Conducting mandatory vision, hearing, scoliosis, and growth and development screenings.
- Implementing and tracking referrals for abnormal screenings.
- Growth, development, and nutritional counseling and education.
- Attends student conferences as requested.
Ensures that a Cumulative School Health Record is established for each student and the record includes documentation of identified health problems and corrective measures taken. Completes a separate professional treatment record to be used to document the provision of confidential health services by the health care professionals. Documentation includes follow-up on referrals, coding, and filing of pertinent information in the student’s cumulative health record (paper or electronic).
Assists in identification of high-risk students with medical issues requiring assistance and possible emergency intervention in the school setting. Individual Care Plans and Emergency Care Plans will be initiated and shared with appropriate staff.
Acts as liaison/nursing consultant in communication of health-related problems (within the limits of client confidentiality and FDOH policy) between parents, teachers, coaches, guidance counselors, resource deputies, other health providers and students (including home visits as needed) to form a collaborative effort to meet the needs of the child. Attend 504 and IEP meetings as needed. Provides student specific training to school district personnel. Collaborates with school and community support services to facilitate the oversight of student health and improve health outcomes of students. Provides direct and indirect direction, support, and guidance for support personnel from the Health Department and the School District. Document competency of support personnel through skills verification, testing, and continued monitoring.
When working with middle and or high school youth, provides a teen-friendly approach to student's medical and emotional needs while advising in a professional, organized and confidential manner. Counseling is always age appropriate.
Provides health education to families, school personnel, students and refers for services when appropriate. Provides age-appropriate nursing counseling as needed. Conducts home visits as necessary.
Participates as a lead member of the School Health Advisory Committee.
Assists in developing/maintains a procedure for administration of medications during school hours. Ensures that medical services (such as, but not limited to, invasive procedures) are provided by appropriately trained individuals, according to physician orders, and these individuals are evaluated annually for competency. Provides Medication Administration classes to School Health Professional as well as all staff designated by the principal to administer medications annually. Provides training for "Field Trip" medication administration annually. Provides education as needed to students permitted by physician and parent to self-administer medications. Ensures that physicians' orders are in place; takes and implements physicians' orders.
As Liaison, manages and coordinates special projects related to School Health as outlined in the local School Health Services Plan, established protocols and/or supervisor's instructions. Provides consultation to the School District regarding policies/procedures, and individual health needs. Assists in completion of annual school health services report. Coordinates collection and entry of data related to school health services into FDOH Health Management System. Responsible for completing EARs (employee activity records) and entering student health screening data into appropriate computer programs within seven days to ensure DOH reporting standards are met.
Responsible for Reports related to the School Health Program. Collaborates with School District Staff to complete reports. Provides lead guidance for School Orientation Day and other district level trainings.
Performs other related duties as assigned per supervisor's instructions with adjustable scheduling. Attends and participates in staff development and in-service education programs. Completes mandatory DOH trainings withing required timeframes. Maintains current CPR certification for health professionals. Follows DOH rules and regulations and departmental policies and procedures. Maintains timely leave/attendance/travel/ Employee Activity Records per DOH policy. Assists in orientation of new personnel.

Ability to safely administer medications and immunizations within scope of nursing licensure
Ability to adapt to necessary changes in duties, duty station, or work hours for the benefit of the agency and the district
Qualifications:
Minimum
- Current active Florida Registered Nursing License or a multistate license from another Compact State in accordance with Florida Statute 464
- Valid drivers license (position requires driving your own and/or a state vehicle to different locations throughout Citrus County
- Willing to work during and beyond normal work hours in the event of an emergency
- Current CPR certification
- Must have excellent computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word and Excel)
- Must be willing and able to work weekends and holidays
- Successful completion of the due diligence process to include, but not limited to, a Level II background check and drug test
Preferred
- BSN or MSN
- School Health Nursing experience
- Pediatric nursing experience
- Experience with immunizations and schedule
- Experience with Fl Shots online immunization information system
