Your Specific Responsibilities:
This is a Health Support Specialist position in the School Health program that provides direct and indirect services primarily in a school setting according to the Florida School Health Administrative Guidelines and the Citrus County School Health Services Plan, during the academic school year. This position will also work in clinics within the Florida Department of Health in Citrus County, and will do so full time during school summer and vacation breaks.
School Health duties and responsibilities
- Provide basic health services to students under the direct and/or indirect supervision of the Community Health Nurse.
- Assists/conducts mandatory health screenings (vision, hearing, scoliosis, BMI)
- Assists in mailing referrals after health screenings
- Assists in data collection and entry of screenings and school health services
- Completes EARs (employee activity records) and entering student health screening data into appropriate computer programs within seven days to ensure DOH reporting standards are m
- Maintains clean school health clinic unit/work area and does periodic inventory of medical/general supplies needed.
- Maintains accurate records/documentation of all work performed.
- Provide support to the RN/CHN assigned to school keeping him/her apprised of daily activities and concerns.
- Assists the school district Supervisor of School Health with duties as requested.
- Conduct monthly inventory and assists in ordering as needed
- Establishes and maintains good working relationships with all staff members.
- Attend School Health in-services as scheduled.
- Attends school health advisory committee meetings as requested.
- Emergency duty required of the incumbent includes working in special needs or Red Cross shelters, or performing other emergency duties including, but not limited to, responses to or threats involving any disaster or threat of disaster, man-made or natural.
- Assists in movement or delivery of supplies, equipment, resources between DOH and schools.
- Assists with collection and entry of data related to school health services into FDOH Health Management System. Responsible for completing EARs (employee activity records) and entering student health screening data into appropriate computer programs within seven days to ensure DOH reporting standards are met.
- Collaborates with school staff to complete data collect related to required reports.
DOH clinic duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Properly take vital signs and input them into the Electronic Health Record (EHR).
- Perform intake interviews and input into EHR.
- Prepare patients for the clinician’s exam, administer basic first aid, assist with patient examinations, operate office medical equipment and perform aseptic procedures.
- Collect routine laboratory specimens as directed by the clinician by performing basic laboratory procedures to include pregnancy test and venipuncture.
- Input lab requests into Emdeon, manifest labs at the end of the day, package and transport lab specimens as required by local protocols.
- Prepares and cleans clinic area for clinic service (i.e. stock supplies, maintain equipment)
- Make appointments
- Utilize electronic medical records
Completes trainings mandated by DOH and the school district
Other duties as directed.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge skills and abilities: Utilization of equipment: Computer, print, fax and telephone skills and data entry knowledge. Knowledge of health equipment to perform job duties. Ability to perform basic first aid, give CPR (if necessary). Ability to keep accurate records; ability to document utilizing electronic records; knowledge of basic medical terminology and techniques; ability to work independently; ability to effectively communicate with others through speech and writing; skills with working with children and adolescents. Ability to utilize personal computer and software Microsoft office suite. Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others. Ability to adapt to necessary changes in duties, duty station, or work hours for the benefit of the agency and the district.
Qualifications:
Minimum –
- Experience working in a medical setting or school health setting.
- Possess a valid driver’s license. Must have reliable transportation.
- Must be able to ambulate more than 100 feet, lift more than 20 pounds, bend, and stand for more than 20 minutes.
- Be able to drive own vehicle or FDOH vehicle to and from schools, meetings, and community events.
- Must be willing to work during and beyond normal work hours in the event of an emergency.
