MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
 

A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a major in one of the biological sciences and two (2) years of professional biological experience in a field or laboratory program; or
 

A master's degree from an accredited college or university in one of the biological sciences and one (1) year of professional experience as described above; or
 

A doctorate from an accredited college or university in one of the biological sciences.

Requires possession of a valid Class E driver license.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

Incumbent must pass a pulmonary function test with medical evaluation, must undergo and pass regular respirator fit-testing, and must wear a respirator when required.  Will be subject to the requirements of the proper use of appropriate respirator.
 

NOTES:
 

The headquarters for this position are located at the Live Oak Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory at 912 Nobles Ferry Road, Live Oak, Florida 32064.
 

JOB DUTIES:
 

The incumbent will serve as a Biological Scientist for the Live Oak Laboratory (LOL).
 

The incumbent is responsible for the isolation and identification bacterial and mycotic pathogens from diverse non-primate specimens. Routine culture, gram stain, microscopic studies, and biochemical tests. Preparing various culture media and biochemicals required for bacterial and fungal culture and identification. Prepare culture plates for shipment to the Bronson Animal Disease Diagnostic laboratory and reference laboratories as needed.
 

The incumbent is responsible for the preparation, examination, and interpretation of fecal samples including Zinc and sugar fecal flotations, direct fecal analysis, Baermann test, McMaster egg counts, fecal sedimentations.
 

The incumbent will participate in cross training and assist with other activities within the laboratory including Necropsy, Agar Gel Immunodiffusion (AGID), Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA), and other tests that the laboratory might introduce.  Ensure timely and accurate reports of results are provided to submitters, program managers, and other applicable parties authorized to receive results.  Assists the laboratory director by keeping up-to-date documents, records, and the laboratory in compliance with Quality Assurance (QA) requirements.  Participate in proficiency testing or interlaboratory comparison programs.  Maintain and utilize reference cultures associated with testing procedures.
 

Serve as point of contact for laboratory clients and provide technical information and recommendation as needed. Manage laboratory supplies. Determine the supplies that are necessary for full laboratory function and places orders for laboratory supplies.  Maintains equipment, test procedures and processes to ensure laboratory expectations are current and vital to the state of Florida disease prevention mission. Incumbent is required to attend special Shipping and Packaging training provided by Department of Health (DOH) every two (2) years to enhance laboratory preparedness in the event of animal disease emergencies.
 

This position will serve as the backup for answering incoming calls and responding to correspondence in shared email boxes.  Will serve as the backup for assistance in the Necropsy Laboratory to Pathologist. 
 

Performs other related duties as assigned.
