Your Specific Responsibilities:

This is work providing professional dental hygiene services consisting of prophylaxis, root planning, curettage and delegated remediable tasks.  Work may also consist of the promotion and establishment of population-based dental preventive and educational programs and related dental public health activities.  This position is under the direct supervision of the Dentist.  Incumbent is responsible for securing the information set for the purpose of protecting confidentiality, data integrity and appropriate access per DOH policies and procedures.  Assure DOH privacy procedures are followed and documented. 

 

  • Removes calculus deposits, accretions, and stains from exposed surfaces of the teeth and from the tooth surfaces within the gingival sulcus.

 

  • Performs gingival curettage and root planning. Pre-assesses and charts suspected findings of the oral cavity.  Records procedures performed in treatment record.  Places, exposes, processes and mounts dental radiographic film.  Applies sealants and topical fluorides. Polishes clinical crowns and amalgam restorations.  Instructs patients in oral hygiene care and supervises patient oral hygiene care.

 

  • Promotes, develops, and conducts community and school-based preventive and educational program to include a County Dental Education program; provides information to teachers, nurses and aides in school clinics and nursing homes.  Aids and information to school board and county administration in Dental Health Education.  Coordinates activities related to evaluation or preventive programs involving the use of topical fluorides and other oral hygiene procedures for community groups, schools, daycare centers, and geriatric centers; interprets policies, procedures, and standards for implementation of fluoride programs; schedules visits to help determine information needs and provides information to in-house staff.

 

  • Time sheet and EAR entry within the required time frame. Subject to emergency duty in the event of a natural disaster. Completion of all mandatory or assigned trainings within the required time frame.

 

Assists the Dentist in the absence of the Dental Assistant providing four handed dentistry skills and client services.

 

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of dental terminology, knowledge of dental hygiene principles and practices.  Skill in using dental instruments, equipment and performing dental prophylaxis.  Ability to instruct patients in preventive dental techniques and communicate effectively.

Must be licensed as a Dental Hygienist in the State of Florida
