This is work administering all activities of a medical laboratory, including conducting laboratory tests to provide information for use in the diagnosis, prevention, or treatment of diseases.


Duties & Responsibilities / Examples of Work:

  • Maintains operational efficiency through the performance of laboratory testing in the following areas: Hematology, Chemistry, Serology, Urinalysis, Therapeutic Drug Monitoring and EKGs.  Performs these tests only with appropriate order from a physician.  Participates in proficiency testing exercises in all areas of work performed in the laboratory.
  • Performs quality control procedures before reporting any patient test results according to laboratory policy.  Documents all corrective action measures taken and takes appropriate action to correct the problem.  Does not report any patient results when quality control requirements have not been satisfied.
  • Performs phlebotomy procedures according to laboratory policy and educates persons served and ward staff in proper collection techniques of non-blood specimens.
  • Ensures management excellence by accurately completing all tasks and documentation required by supervisor including but not limited to: quality control, corrective action, and equipment maintenance, temperature checks, communicating of critical results, complaints, ward draw status, calibration verification, call-backs, verbal order changes, USP measures and problem logs.
  • Evaluates test results for accuracy before verification based on specimen integrity, inter-results comparability, analyzer performance and any other circumstances, which may contribute to the invalidity of test results.  Recollects specimen if integrity is questionable.  Repeats and communicates critical results according to policy.
  • Utilizes resources efficiently.  Manages tangible resources in order to obtain the maximum cost efficiency without sacrificing quality.  Effectively uses computer to order tests, verity results and print reports.  Utilizes time efficiently by prioritizing tasks, helping coworkers and seeking projects from supervisor during times of low work volume.
  • Maintains clean and professional appearance of self and workspace.  Ensures compliance with standards by following all laboratory and hospital safety protocols including the proper use of personal protective equipment at all times.  Follows all laboratory, hospital and Department of Children and Families Policies and Procedures.  Maintains licensure in compliance with state laws.
  • Ensures optimum customer satisfaction by treating the people served with dignity and respect and provides assistance to physicians and other health-care workers with laboratory related issues.  Performs functions of Health Support Technician in the absence of the Health Support Technician.
  • Maintains and troubleshoots laboratory equipment according to manufactures’ recommendations and laboratory policies.  Contacts manufacturers’ hotlines to obtain assistance.  Notifies supervisor when workflow is affected by equipment malfunction.  Maintains adequate inventory of reagents and supplies.  Provides Health Support Technician with information required to place orders in a timely manner, thus minimizing necessity for urgent delivery of supplies.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of the principles of biology, chemistry, and physics.
  • Knowledge of medical technology practices and procedures.
  • Knowledge of the types of laboratory tests.
  • Knowledge of laboratory equipment and testing procedures.
  • Knowledge of chemicals and reagents.
  • Knowledge of the significance of laboratory tests.
  • Skill in operating laboratory and scientific equipment for conducting tests.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Licensed or temporarily licensed as a Clinical Laboratory Technologists in the specialty area(s) (i.e., microbiology, serology, chemistry, hematology, immunohematology, biophysics, cytotechnology, or histopathological technology) for which the laboratory is registered in accordance with Florida Statute 483 and one year of laboratory experience in the specialty area(s) to which the position is allocated.
