This is an entry level, training, nursing position tasked in the care and treatment of mentally ill persons in a very large state facility.


Provides comprehensive nursing care and treatment for mentally and physically ill persons in accordance with established nursing techniques and procedures in a state mental hospital under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse.  These procedures include the preparation and administration of medications, use of medications, use of machine for suction, administration of tube feedings, catheterizations and starting of intravenous solutions. Is knowledgeable in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and can perform in an emergency situation.


Trains with a Registered Nurse on unit operations, preparing and administering prescribed drugs, recording usage and counting of controlled substances, aides in resuction of controllable expenses.


Makes rounds with their preceptor (RN) and Physician and performs appropriate nursing treatment as directed by physician’s orders under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse.


Attends and participates in individual and group therapuetic sessions, increasing the number of people served.  Participates in implementation of applicable treatment and rehabilitation team programs.


Records and rpeorts significant events as well as physical and mental illnesses and behavior of persons served. Charts all medications, treatments, and physical or mental conditions in a timely manner. Notifies precepting RN of the requirement to cosign and approve all documentation.


Provides for optimum customer satisfaction by observing patient behavior and reaction to medication and drugs.


Performs related duties as directed.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: of this position are the ability to correctly pass medications, good nursing assessment skills, good documentation skills, good communication skilles, recognition of medications and their effectiveness, ability to work well with others, ability to ambulate the campus, ability to obtain licenseure as a Registered Nurse within 3 months of starting in the position. This also includes satisfactory evaluations from the precepting nurse to demonstrate competency in all aspects of nursing care as in relates to mental health.


This occupations requires completion of an accredited RN program, a diploma from the program along with an authorization to register for the Florida Board of Nursing Exam are required.


This occupation requires completion and maintenance of MANDT, CPR-C, Infection Control, OSHA, Sexual Harrassment, Diversity, and abuse training is required.  Must obtain licenseure as a Registered Nurse within 3 months of starting in the position. Must maintain all related CEUs and keep them up-to-date. Intervention with combative individuals may be required. Ability to lift and carry at least 25 pounds. Pushing, pulling, bending, stooping, and kneeling may be required in the performance of duties.


Hours: 7am- 3:30 (split days, shifts rotation, etc)
