Within DCF, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health (SAMH) Program office is recognized as the single state authority for substance abuse and mental health services. The Office of SAMH is statutorily responsible for the planning, evaluation, and implementation of a comprehensive statewide system of care for the prevention, treatment, and recovery of children and adults with serious mental illnesses or substance use disorders.
Northeast Florida State Hospital (NEFSH) is a 613-bed, licensed mental health treatment facility that provides person-centered services to adults suffering from severe and persistent mental illness. The hospital, located in Macclenny, was established in 1959 and is the largest state operated civil treatment facility.

THIS IS AN ANTICIPATED VACANCY.
This is a highly responsible and professional position that will serve as a Rehabilitation Therapist Supervisor – SES at the Northeast Florida State Hospital. This position will collaborate with each section within the state facilities and be required to use independent judgement, take initiative in carrying out duties and responsibilities and should be extraordinarily detail oriented.
This position is a highly responsible and independent position assigned to the NEFSH Treatment Mall pilot program which is the hub of all treatment groups and activities essential to the provision of psychiatric services for approximately 150 residents. For a minimum of four hours daily, all residents and staff assigned to specific living areas, will relocate to the treatment mall for groups and classes. Incumbent serves as designee in the absence of the Treatment Mall Manager to ensure continuity of daily operations.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities include:
- Prepares work schedules and assignments of subordinates.
- Approves time and attendance, daily work records and leave requests.
- Sets performance standards, evaluates, and prepares performance evaluations.
- Recommends hiring, termination, and promotion of employees.
- Counsels subordinates and takes appropriate disciplinary action in accordance with higher authority directivies.
- Provides on the job training and schedules training in corrdination with SD&T.
- Compiles, organizes, and analyzes data for services provided by subordinates.
- Submits reports, assignments and data on time.
- To implement an outcome oriented management system, the incumbent attends meetings, seminars, and training sessions as required.
- Participates in on-going in-service education for professional development.
- To increase delivery of direct treatment services, the incumbent will provide functional skills and/or evidenced based groups by planning, coordinating, and conducting same to include simulation exercises and classroom activities.
- To improve adaptive functioning of the individuals we serve, the incumbent actively participates in the treatment process by monitoring person served performance, provides written observation, outcomes and recommendations for future treatment.
- Provides documentation to each individuals' Recovery Team.
- Manages assigned areas to ensure engineering requests and housekeeping services are addressed.
- Conducts inventory and safety checks; reports any problems and follows up on any corrections needed.
- Conducts Grade Book Audits for the Treatment Mall; creates audit sheets; tabulates scores; sends results to supervisors and Department Heads and tracks findings.
- Works in cooperation and collaboration with other hospital disciplies, services and outside agencies.
- Ensures professional staff time is spent primarily in the delivery of treatment serviced by monitoring progress and maintaining records of staff and the people we serve; participated in training and research.
- Manages financial activities, prepares Annual budgets or areas of responsibility, monitors money requests and purchases.
- Assists in the escorting and monitoring of the people we serve.
- Maintains Certification as Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS).
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required for the position:
- Knowledge of the principles and practices of one of the allied health field disciplines or one of the rehabilitative sciences.
- Ability to supervise people.
- Ability to oversee educational, vocational or rehabilitation therapy programs.
- Ability to determine work priorities, assign work and ensure proper completion of work assignments.
- Ability to write evaluation and progress reports.
- Ability to communicate effectively.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
Minimum Qualifications:
- A bachelor’s degree in one of the following areas to be considered for the position: Behavioral Sciences, Social Sciences, Rehabilitation Sciences, Psychology, Counseling, Music Therapy, Art Therapy, Music Education, Physical Education with course work Adaptive Physical Education, Vocational Education, Dance Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Leisure studies with course work in Therapeutic Recreation, or Horticulture Therapy.
- Two years’ experience supervising others.
Preference will be given to applicants who have:
- Five years of professional experience in a therapeutic setting providing educational, therapeutic services, or career guidance.
