The Work You Will Do:
Senior Equipment Operator - District Three / Marianna Maintenance
This position upon receipt of the required CDL Instructional permit or license will operate vehicles and a variety of large equipment.

Your Specific Responsibilities:
Operates vehicles and a variety of large equipment to include, but not limited to; road graders, sewer cleaner and hydraulic excavators in bridge and roadway maintenance. Performs minor maintenance and servicing work in connection with any type of equipment operated and assists in the repairs of this equipment; check and add fluids, checks/adjusts brakes, maintains proper air pressure in all tires, etc. Cleans and washes equipment. Supervises Department of Corrections inmates crew performing maintenance activities.
Coordinates, participates, and directs the maintenance activity of the assigned crew. Assists in selecting materials, supplies, equipment, inspecting, planning workloads, workflows, deadlines, work objectives and time utilization with employees. Maintains records of operation. Prepares and maintains daily paperwork such as crew activity reports and daily vehicle check lists.
Performs independent manual labor incidental to job assignments.
Performs Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic).
Performs rough carpentry, masonry, painting and/or assists in the assembly and erection of highway signs.
Trains crew members in the operation of heavy equipment and of basic Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic). Assists with crew activity reports as needed. Coordinates, participates, and directs the maintenance activity of the chemical herbicide program as needed.
The Successful Candidate will have the following required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of:
- Knowledge of mathematical calculations.
- Knowledge of standard safety rules and procedures.
- Knowledge of the procedures, techniques and use of equipment in the maintenance and repair of highways, bridges and/or other highway structures.
Skills in:
- Skilled in operating a variety of hand and power tools.
- Skilled in operating and performing minor maintenance on large equipment and vehicles.
- Skilled in completing job related reports and forms.
- Skilled in communicating both verbally and in writing, including following oral/written instructions.
Ability to:
- Ability to operate a variety of heavy equipment.

- Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with others.
- Ability to lift, carry, and handle up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to stoop, climb, squat, push, pull, crawl or bend on a frequent basis.
- Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions, on various terrains and at various heights or in high volume traffic.
Licensure/Registration/Certification Requirements:
A valid Class “A” CDL (Commercial Driver’s License) is required. Must obtain certification in Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic) – Intermediate Level within one year and maintain it. All herbicide applicators shall be licensed by the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Affairs in three areas: core curriculum, right of way, and aquatics. The Department will allow an employee under the direct supervision of a licensed applicator to train and gain experience for a period not to exceed twelve months, after which they shall be licensed.
Other Job-Related Requirements:
Due to the nature of this position, the incumbent must respond to emergencies when necessary. While on-duty status, the position’s incumbent must be readily available to operate a commercial motor vehicle (CMV), consistent with the type of commercial driver’s license (CDL). The incumbent is required to possess, or on a routine basis performs other CMV safety-sensitive functions. The incumbent of this position is required to work with or around Department of Corrections inmates. The incumbent must satisfactorily pass a criminal background check to work with or around Department of Corrections inmates. The incumbent must also be trained and must maintain training certification from the Department of Corrections to supervise inmates.
Minimum Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or Certificate of High School Equivalency, Valid Class “A” Commercial Driver’s License, and four years of infrastructure construction or maintenance experience.
- An additional year of experience, for a total of five years of experience in infrastructure construction or maintenance is a substitute for a High School Diploma or Certificate of High School Equivalency.
This position requires a valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License with an acceptable driving record in accordance with the Department’s Driver’s Record Requirements Policy. An unacceptable driving record is defined as any of the following:
- three (3) or more moving violations in the past three (3) years that accumulate three (3) or more points per violation;
- any two (2) convictions of reckless driving in the past three (3) years;
- a suspension or revocation of the driver license for moving violations in the past three (3) years; and
- a suspension or revocation for refusal to take a sobriety test, or any suspension or revocation for a DUI conviction, in the past four (4) years.
