The Work You Will Do:
District Roadway Design Engineer / Design / Transportation Development
This position plays a critical leadership role within the Florida Department of Transportation by ensuring roadway projects are designed safely, efficiently, and in full compliance with state and federal standards. Overall, the DRDE serves as the district’s roadway design authority, helping FDOT deliver transportation infrastructure that is safe, compliant, cost-effective, and constructible.

Your Specific Responsibilities:
Directs, coordinates, and supervises the Roadway Design staff in the activities of the production process and preparation of highway construction contract plans. Supervises employees by communicating regularly, motivating, training, evaluating, planning and directing employees work. This includes organizing, budgeting, training, and engineering guidance. Participates in applicant selection and hiring process. Ensures all designs and contract plans are developed in accordance with applicable federal regulations, state laws, and Florida Department of Transportation (Department) policy and standards. Supervises the Roadway Design, Traffic Plans, Computer Aided Drafting and Design (CADD), Plans Reviews on quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC), and Pavement Design staff as appropriate. Signs and seals roadway contract plans as needed; performs and participates in District Quality Assurance Reviews (QAR) performed by Central Office on consultant projects and In-House projects. Develops and monitors the objectives of the internal Design Business Plan.
Represents the District at the District Roadway Design Engineer Meetings, making decisions and recommendations on behalf of the District including getting input from all appropriate offices in the District prior to the meetings and disseminating the results of the meetings to the appropriate District staff. Assists in policy development focused on consistency statewide.
Reviews Typical Sections, Design Exceptions and Variations, Community Aesthetic Features, and Pavement Design Packages and provides recommendations to the District Design Engineer. Provides professional technical engineering knowledge, support, and direction to Design engineers and technicians. Reviews and approves roadway plans, documents, Local Agency Program (LAP), Intelligent Transportation System (ITS), permits, etcetera, prepared by other engineers and technicians. Evaluates design changes proposed by contractors. Assists construction staff in resolving field condition problems. Participates in field inspections of highways, as necessary.
Develops potential Resurfacing, Restoration and Rehabilitation (RRR) projects based on lane mile targets for the District. Provides engineering input and analysis in the development, scoping, and Long Range Estimates (LRE) for each of the RRR candidates. Serves on Technical Review Committee (TRC) in consultant acquisition and Technical Advisory Group (TAG) for consultant design bid build, design/build projects, and alternative contracting. Assists in the development of scope of services and staff hours negotiations. Participates in technical review committees, public meetings, presentations and hearings. Serves as a liaison with governmental and civic agencies. Performs presentations and serves as an expert witness for the Department as needed.
The Successful Candidate will have the following required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of:
- Concepts, terminologies, design principles and analytical techniques of highway design.
- Computer aided drafting and design (CADD) tools and automated office products.
- Project engineering, scheduling, planning, supervision, and assigning and prioritizing work assignments.
- And skilled in interpretation of roadway design standards, specifications and criteria established or adopted by Florida Department of Transportation.
- Management, supervisory, and leadership principles and practices.
Skills in:
- Engineering process for design and production of roadway plans.
- Communicating technical information verbally and in writing.
- Planning, organizing, and managing multiple work assignments.
Ability to:
- Establish and maintain effective internal and external working relationships.
- Apply engineering quantitative techniques in the area of highway design.

Licensure/Registration/Certification Requirements:
Registration as a Professional Engineer in accordance with Chapter 471, Florida Statutes.
Other Job-Related Requirements:
