Your Specific Responsibilities:
The Health Support Technician (HST) in the School Health Program will function in a paraprofessional role providing health support services in assigned schools, specifically to students in a geographical area. Primary responsibility is being part of a team providing support for the delivery of school health services to students in Miami-Dade County Public Schools. The incumbent in this position will perform under the direct supervision of the Senior Community Health Nursing Supervisor and receive oversight from a professional Senior Community Health Nurse in the school setting. Incumbent will need to travel to work /alternate sites as assigned. Incumbent communicates effectively with a diverse population including the parents at schools in English and Spanish or Creole. The incumbent must observe and follow applied federal, state, and local laws, policies, rules regulations and procedures and maintain student’s confidentiality at all times.
Provides health services in the health room under the delegation of the school health nurse. Incumbent must be able to recognize signs of common illnesses and follow appropriate measures according to established protocols and procedures. Communicate urgent health/psycho-social needs of students to professional staff, i.e. nurse, social worker, principal/designee and counselor as well as the parent or other sources as directed by the school nurse. HST will take vital signs and document findings in the appropriate documentation record. HST will intervene appropriately based on findings. HST will also assist the Senior Community Health Nurse (Sr. CHN) with conducting health screenings and maintain daily log of all students receiving services in the school’s health room.
Provides and supports the provision of school health services in additional schools. Services include but may not be limited to: assisting the nurse with communicable disease control including classroom inspections for health lice, assist with the district-wide health screenings such as Body Mass Index (BMI), vision etc. Assist the Sr. CHN by documenting, maintaining materials, supplies and following-up on health care referrals, recording health information within individual student health records, assist with maintaining list of students with significant health conditions and following-up with phone calls, letters to parents, providing first aid to students, notifying parents of accidents or illness, and administering medications according to district policy and procedures. Incumbent ensures infection control measures and OSHA guidelines are being maintained. Assists with monitoring the school site for health and safety hazards. Assists with keeping an inventory of supplies necessary for clinical operations and providing school principal with list for ordering supplies as needed. Performs clerical work in the health rooms as designated by the school nurse.
Assists professional staff with in-service/education programs for students/parents and school personnel regarding health-related issues. Assist with precepting new paraprofessional staff. Document on the student’s Individual Health Records on health services performed. Develops, under the direction of the school RN, a current high-risk list of students with potential life –threatening allergies and/or chronic diseases and disorders. Provides emergency treatment and supportive care by activating emergency services (911) in accordance with the presenting issue and established emergency care plan, for students having allergic reaction or other urgent issues. Assists nurse, parent and school staff in assuring the students have medical support supplies that are up to date at all times.
Assists professional staff in filing, data collection and maintenance of student school health records. Assist in the development of written reports and data summary throughout the school year. Assists other programs with clinical support and other agency related activates. Participates in cross-training activities/assignments. Participates in at least two community health fairs and “Open House” activities per year.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge and proficiency with computers and various computer programs and software.
- Preferred experience with Electronic Health Records.
Qualifications:
Minimum –
Certification as a medical assistant, patient care technician or in a related field, valid driver's license, private automobile to perform work related duties.
Preferred-
Incumbent in this position is preferred to be bilingual in English and Spanish or English/Creole.
