Your Specific Responsibilities:
This is a position in a large multi-service health center as a Health Support Technician to provide clinical support for Laboratory Services Program, to receive, record, transport and deliver laboratory specimens and results to all clinical areas of the Florida Department of Health in the Miami-Dade County. This position reports directly to the Laboratory Program Manager.
Picks up and delivers specimens as well as confidential material from all clinical sites of the Florida Department of Health in the Miami Dade County to the Bureau of Public Health Laboratories-Miami for diagnostic testing on a daily basis. As an additional Quality Assurance measure for specimens’ accountability and integrity, verifies specimens against manifests/shipping logs, signs logs at the time specimens are picked up in each site, handles and stores specimens as per specific temperature requirements. Monitors the temperature of vehicle coolers and maintains temperature log. Brings to lab technicians’ and lab manager’s attention all discrepancies between manifest and BPHL-Miami triage count.
Per clinics requests receives specimens’ collection kits, vials transport media, culture media, specimens shipping containers and delivers them to the sites. Delivers Proficiency Testing samples to clinical labs and picks up results in timely and confidential manner to meet deadlines. Receives HIV results from the Bureau of Public Health Laboratory-Miami and delivers them in confidential manner to the clinics. Receives liquid quality control vials, prepares sets for each clinic and ensures their timely delivery to all clinical labs. Picks up and delivers documentation to and from the laboratory administrative office.
Operates a motor vehicle utilized for the delivery and pick-up of specimens from clinical sites to the Bureau of Public Health Laboratories-Miami. Complies with vehicle maintenance schedule. Keeps daily vehicle mileage Log and submits it to the Business office on a monthly basis.
Assists in administrative and clerical duties for the lab services program as needed, including maintaining of filing system, copying/scanning of documents, answering phone calls, taking messages, receiving and distributing mail, keeping inventory of supplies, and other office duties.
Assists Laboratory staff in specimens’ collection, processing, testing and reporting, performs venipuncture and fingerstick, performs waived type laboratory tests such as Hemoglobin, Pregnancy test, Urine dipstick, blood glucose, rapid HIV and other waived type tests per SOPs, handles and stores specimens as per specific temperature requirements. Places electronic orders and enters results into HMS and into logs, ensures accuracy. Reviews submitted lab order forms for completeness and to ensure matching labels on the specimen containers. Disposes of blood or other biohazard fluids or tissue, contaminated sharps in accordance with applicable OSHA standards, DOH-MD SOPs and policies.
Attends general, lab program staff meetings and mandatory trainings to enhance professional growth. Follows all security guidelines when using a computer for email, internet, and all other programs pertaining to Lab Services. Performs other duties as necessary and as they relate to the program to achieve the best outcome possible for clients and program including traveling to different clinics as needed. Participates in disaster response activities.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of basic medical terminology, arithmetic, basic computer software, administrative and clerical procedures and systems.
- Ability to understand and follow instructions.
- Ability to work independently, to communicate effectively and establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
- Ability to plan, organize and coordinate work assignments, and record keeping.
- Knowledge and skills to safely operate and maintain a motor vehicle.

- Skills in using medical instruments or testing equipment, in drawing blood by venipuncture and fingerstick.
Qualifications:
Minimum -
Valid driver’s license, phlebotomy experience.
