The Eleventh Judicial Circuit’s Criminal Mental Health Project (CMHP) is seeking a compassionate and motivated Peer Specialist to join our Jail Diversion Program team. Established in 2000, the CMHP aims to divert individuals with serious mental illnesses and co-occurring substance use disorders away from the criminal justice system and into comprehensive, community-based treatment and support services.

The Peer Specialist will use their own lived experience with mental health and/or substance use recovery to support and empower individuals recently booked into the county jail and awaiting adjudication. The position focuses on helping participants engage with treatment, identify recovery goals, and build a path toward wellness and community reintegration.

 

Responsibilities

 

  • Provides support services to program participants and serves as a member of the Jail Diversion Program staff.
  • Assists program participants with the jail release process.
  • Accompanies program participants to appointments in the community and court using public transportation.
  • Provides information to program participants, staff and other stakeholders as necessary.
  • Documents interactions with program participants in the Florida Drug Court Case Management System and SharePoint, as well as any other IT systems that may be utilized.
  • Serves as a consultant and faculty for Crisis Intervention Team training to law enforcement personnel.
  • Handles multiple assignments simultaneously, including providing assistance to Jail Diversion staff as necessary.
  • Clerical tasks as necessary.
  • Performs related work as required.

 

Qualifications

 

  • High School diploma or GED required.
  • Certified Recovery Peer Specialist preferred but will consider applicants working toward certification, supplemented by knowledge and one (1) year experience in mental health/substance abuse recovery and must be able to serve as a role model of recovery.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of community resources in order to assist with linkage to mental health treatment, services and other community resources.
  • Ability to follow directions and communicate effectively.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with co-workers, judiciary, court administration and community agencies.
  • Ability to utilize public transportation.
  • Ability to use computer programs such as Microsoft Office Suites (e.g., Word, Excel, Outlook, Zoom), the Florida Drug Court Case Management System, and SharePoint.
  • Ability to manage time effectively.
  • Ability to apply excellent organizational skills.

 

 

Working Conditions:

  • Moderate noise; business office setting; community contacts and visits.

 

Physical Demands:

  • Work involves a significant amount of standing, walking, sitting, typing, talking, listening, stooping, and reaching with hands and arms; must be able to transfer up to 10 pounds.
