Job Description:
This is a part-time Reader/Driver position located within the Division of Blind Services, District 12 Office in Miami, FloridaThe goal of the Division of Blind Services Employment Program is to assist individuals with visual impairments in achieving or maintaining an employment outcome that is consistent with his/her unique strengths, resources, priorities, concerns, abilities, capabilities, interests, and informed choices. The incumbent in this position will provide reading and transportation services for an Employment Program Counselor and/or other staff members with a visual impairment, to assist the staff members in meeting his/her essential job requirements that require work tasks outside of the office environment.  The incumbent in this position may as needed, perform general office tasks and duties in addition to their main duty of serving as a Reader/Driver.

 

Examples of Work:

  • Acts as a reader for visually impaired staff. This includes reading confidential documents and emails as needed.
  • Provides transportation for staff to provide community outreach and informational sessions to unreached and underserved populations.
  • Provides transportation to attend client related meetings.
  • Provides transportation to and from trainings, conferences, and workshops as needed.
  • Operates the state vehicle and follows all guidelines in relation to the use of the state vehicle.
  • Completes vehicle logs as needed.
  • Maintains confidentiality standards required by all State of Florida employees.
  • Possesses and maintains a valid Florida Driver's License and a clear driving record.
  • Inputs work hours into the People First System. 
  • Documents and records information as needed.
  • Enters, transcribes, records, stores, and/or maintains information in either written format or by electronic/magnetic recording.
  • Processes information to include compiling, coding, categorizing, calculating, tabulating, auditing, or verifying data.
  • Communicates with clients and entities outside of the division.
  • Represents the division to its customers, clients, the public, government officials and other external entities. Information can be exchanged face-to-face, in writing or via telephone/electronic transfer.
  • Performs administrative duties and tasks in the office such as faxing, copying, scanning, and shredding.
  • Approves requests, handles paperwork, and performs day-to-day administrative duties and tasks.
  • Obtains information needed to do the job by research and by using analytical skills.
  • Observes, receives, and otherwise obtains information from all relevant sources.
  • Uses a personal computer, the Microsoft Suite of products to include Outlook, Word, Excel, Power Point, and Access, etc.
  • Communicates internally with supervisors, staff, and coworkers.
  • Provides information to supervisors, fellow coworkers, and others as needed.
  • Establishes and maintains positive working relationships.
  • May sometimes handle, move, and transport office products or objects.
  • Evaluates information against known policies, procedures, and by learning the specifics of the division.
  • Proofreads documents, data, and other information.
  • Mails documents, stuffs envelopes and addresses, stamps, sorts, and distributes mail, packages, and other materials as needed.
  • Scans and indexes files.
  • Composes and drafts letters and other correspondence.
  • Orders materials, supplies, and services, and completes records and reports.
  • Answers telephones, responds to requests, delivers messages, and runs errands.
  • Inputs and retrieves program specific information and/or prints program documents.

 

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities: 

  • Ability to read and comprehend written information and documents. 
  • Ability to formulate sentences and use proper spelling and grammar.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in writing and in person.
  • Ability to gather information and conduct fact-finding research.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with clients, customers, coworkers, supervisors, and other entities both internally and externally.
  • Ability to practice active listening and the ability to take notes and draft documents from in-person conversations.
  • Basic knowledge of mathematics to solve problems and add/subtract totals and figures.
  • Ability to coordinate office functions, meetings, and assist with set-up of trainings and workshops.

  • Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services including needs assessment techniques, quality service standards, alternative delivery systems and customer satisfaction evaluation techniques.
  • Ability to use a personal computer and software products to complete job tasks and duties.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • This position requires a valid Florida Class E Driver License with an acceptable driving record in accordance with FDOE and DBS State Vehicle Policies and Procedures.  An unacceptable driving record is defined as any of the following:
    • Three (3) or more moving violations in the past 2 years that accumulate 3 or more points per violation.
    • Any two (2) convictions of reckless driving in the past 2 years.
    • A suspension or revocation of the driver license for moving violations in the past 2 years; and/or
    • A suspension or revocation for refusal to take a field sobriety test, or any suspension or revocation for a DUI conviction in the past 3-4 years. 
    • Your driving record will be reviewed, and the status of your driver license confirmed.
  • Ability to maintain a clear driving history.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
